Fines based on income - German fined 208,000 euros for fiddling supermarket

    Bet that hurt.

A man in Germany has been fined 208,000 (184,224) for putting expensive meat through a self-service checkout as cheaper fruit.
The man was ordered to pay the fine, which was calculated based on his income, after trying to cheat the till to avoid paying 47 for veal liver.
Munich's district court convicted the 58-year-old businessman of theft and based his hefty financial penalty on his monthly income of 24,000 (21,000).
The man, who has not been named, is said to have a history of supermarket self-service fraud, having tried to cheat the system three times before.
He also has past convictions for theft and tax evasion.
The thief has now been released from jail, where he had been held since the incident in December.

It makes sense in a way to base fines on affordability.
On the one hand there's a prescribed punishment that is deemed just. On the other hand, as a deterent, that just punishmnet could be prescribed as a percentage.

Still, 200 times one's daily income is quite steep.

Trying to pass 47 euro of liver off as carrots is quite silly.

Surely it's based on wealth, not income.

Unless fining someone over 8 1/2 month's pay for scamming 47 euro of meat, fourth offense or not, is the norm.

The article states the judgement was based on his income.

You need to get more attuned to legalese and legal matters, Lulu.

I remember they regularly used to catch Saudi women shoplifting in Harrods only to find they had tens of thousands of pounds in their purse.

The richest wealthiest people are the biggest villains.

Can they fine tax dodgers and international companies in a similar way..

Yes, the first 4 words in the thread title did say that. Hence:

"Surely it's based on wealth, not income.

Unfortunately you're not intelligent enough to understand what I wrote. Never mind. You can get back to preparing for your work.

I recall a similar system in the UK, but there was an option at the time to not reveal one's income. I don't know if it's the same now.
