    Are you left handed?

What country has the highest rate of left handed people?
This is a complicated question to answer because it is tied to the history of handedness. It is estimated that 10% of the world's population is left-handed but in certain areas of the world the percentage is higher and in other areas lower. This is related to the sad fact that throughout history there was a great deal of bias and stigma associated with being left-handed and lefties were forced to use their right hands. This bias still exists in many cultures today. Only in recent years North America and Western Europe have taken a more liberal stance on handedness and permitted children to use their naturally dominant hand. The rates of lefties in these countries tend to be higher, approximately 12%. In Asian, Muslim and Latin American counties the rates tend to be lower. In countries where children are still forced to stop using their dominant left hand such as Korea (2%), Japan (3%) and Taiwan (5%) you will find the lowest percentage of lefties. Most of these statistics can be found at Handedness Statistics.
Because it wasn't until recent times that many countries stopped this practice, older generations will report less lefties since those were the generations forced to use their right-hands. Even in the twentieth century the Soviet bloc countries persisted in discouraging left-handedness. It is hard to believe but in Albania it was actually made a crime to be left-handed (History of Handedness - Recent History).
Therefore, the countries that have a longer history of permissiveness in allowing the natural use of the left-hand will show the largest percentage of lefties, while the countries that have a shorter permissive history will have a lower percentage of lefties. It will only be sometime in the future when all lefties are allowed to use their dominant hands that we will be able to get a more accurate idea of how many lefties there really are.

I'm left-handed for everything but swinging a baseball bat and a golf club.

Have no idea how I ended up doing those two things right-handed...

You may, like me, be ambidextrous but had it taught out of you in golf and baseball.
Well, I was ambi. And as in the OP, I was forced by parents and teachers to be right-handed. I used to switch hands when writing, eating, or whatever. No dominant side and adults would get upset and encourage right hand use only.
Today I'm pretty much right-handed but box south paw. I find it odd and difficult to box right-handed. It's just very uncomfortable and unnatural. Besides, my right jab is with my stronger arm and can be quite effective .
I still have fair abiltiy in my left hand but the right is certainly dominant.
    I still can't use left-handed chopsticks, though.

I am left handed in writing. I tend to play sport right handed as in cricket and golf although my dominant kicking foot in football is my right(AFL of course, not that poofy round ball game). Tennis I am ambidextrous but throw a ball left handed only and catch equally either hand.
In my youth I played baseball batted right handed but caught right handed. I eat right handed with a knife and fork but use a spoon left handed. I put that down to my mother swapping my knife and fork to right handed when I was young. I also boxed right handed but my left hook was the killer back then, although these days I'd be flat out making jelly wobble (Jello to those heathens who speake Yankeeze and struggle with real English).
A lot went down to the way I was taught to do things, which was mostly the right handed way. They gave up on trying to make me write right handed. So in my case it got down to being taught to do most things right handed which was pretty normal where I grew up in the southern suburbs of Melbourne.

I don't understand the right handed catching bit. I bat right handed and catch right handed. I thought that was natural?
My left hook was never extraordinary, but my right hook is devestating, as is my right jab. As I said, I box south paw.

What was your first clue, Butters?...Or did you think it was golf?...Heh...

Strong side is the right...But shoot left in hockey...Only anomaly I can think of at the moment, other than the obvious...But it makes for a very powerful backhand...

Left handed people are more creative as they use their right brain.

I am a southpaw for everything, and even play guitar left handed, so I have to change the strings around which is a bugger.

david... when children are very young they are usually taught to hold things in their right hand by their parents, but as time progresses in the lower grades, children may take a pencil and start writing with their left. That is what comes naturally over time.

    This doesn't bode well...

Left-handed people are 10% of the population. Unfortunately, researchers have found that the rate of mental illness in left-handed people is higher than that of right-handed people. People with psychosis are a lot more likely to be left-handed, to the point that while lefties with depression tended to only be about 11% of those diagnosed, lefties with psychosis were about 40%.

"Left-handed people are more likely to have learning disabilities.Lefties are more likely to get dyslexia, ADHD, and different mood disorders, according to one 2010 study."

"Any lefties who hold grudges might be able to blame their brain for it: a small story in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease showed that lefties are more likely to have negative emotions and hide them. This leads to grudge holding behavior that righties might not understand."

Looks like you're a classic south paw, as you claim.

^^Makes sense though.. I'm thinking of artists and musicians..if drugs didn't kill them.. well..

^Oh, thanks a lot! I did have a learning disability in math in elementary school, until I found the right teacher to teach me using manipulatives. You can get some very dry and boring maths teachers out there!

I write with my left hand but am right handed (or footed) for everything else.

When I was given a pen for the first time by my parents, I used my left hand to take it from them. My enlightened parents therefore jumped to the wrong conclusion, that I was left handed and should be encouraged to use my left hand to write.

This explains why my handwriting is so bad, and why so many of my kindergarten students clamour "Teacher Simon, Teacher Simon, why is your writing crap?" (or words to that effect...)

Don't be too sarcastic. I think they were enlightened in bucking the trend of pressuring kids to be right-handed. They may have been wrong (or not) but at least they thought they were encouraging you to be naturally you.

My handwriting is atrocious! I could have been a doctor .

So far a majority of poll participants are ambidextrous. Seems unlikely as people with "true" ambidexterity constitute 1% of the population.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.
