    I got the second one right i think
    The bat is $1 more than the ball; remove $1 from the total = 10c (5c for ball and add 5c to bat).

    The Rice And Chessboard Story

    There's a famous legend about the origin of chess that goes like this. When the inventor of the game showed it to the emperor of India, the emperor was so impressed by the new game, that he said to the man

    "Name your reward!"

    The man responded,

    "Oh emperor, my wishes are simple. I only wish for this. Give me one grain of rice for the first square of the chessboard, two grains for the next square, four for the next, eight for the next and so on for all 64 squares, with each square having double the number of grains as the square before."

    The emperor agreed, amazed that the man had asked for such a small reward - or so he thought. After a week, his treasurer came back and informed him that the reward would add up to an astronomical sum, far greater than all the rice that could conceivably be produced in many many centuries!
    Yes, I did some calculations.
    If the lily pads covers only 1 square metre on day 1, then on day 48, the size of the lilys can cover over 140 million square kilometres.
    The entire earth's water surface is approx 360 million square kilometres.
    So by day 50, all the eath's oceans, seas, lakes etc would be covered.

    a+b = 1.1
    b=a+1
    a+a+1=1.1
    2a=0.10
    a=0.5
    b=1.05

    1 - What sort of bums only spend 5c on a ball, and a buck on a bat? That is the real question. So my answer would be "I have no idea, but I expect at that price, they are very poorly made, most likely in slave labour conditions, and will fall apart fairly soon. So the real price is $1.10 and another $100 as well to buy a proper bat and ball.
    2 - Frankly I do not care. I am more interested in the profit levels achieved which can not be gleaned from this.
    3 - Never. The groundskeeper should be under strict instruction to only let them cover at a maximum one third of the lake for aesthetics sake.
