China's pink, oversized women-only car parks slammed as sexist

Oversized female-only parking spots marked with a stiletto icon in eastern China have been strongly criticised as sexist on Chinese social media.

    Key points:

Women-only car spaces are usually located close to exits and security systems
A social media survey on Weibo showed 63 per cent in favour of the spaces
Other Weibo users were quick to slam them as sexist and treats women like "idiots"
Some men also express outrage that they are not allowed to park in the spaces

The controversial parking spaces at the Jiande and Tonglu service stations in the Zhejiang province are reportedly 3.2-metres wide — or one-and-a-half times the size of "normal" parking spaces.

They join a growing number of extra-large designated women parking spots being unveiled around the country, from shopping malls in Chongqing in south-west China to Hebei in the north.

The purpose of the spaces have been hotly debated on Chinese social media site Sina Weibo, with many netizens saying they reinforce the stereotype that women are bad drivers while others say it is a considerate design.

Fang Hongying, manager of the Jiande highway service area, recently told Chinese state media Xinhua that driving skills were only part of the reason behind the women's only parking spots introduced last October.

"The women's parking spaces are closer to the exits and monitoring systems, which is more convenient for female drivers to take a break or go shopping in the main building, and much safer, especially at night," she said.

A survey conducted on the Sina Weibo found 63 per cent of the 1,700 respondents believed it was a good idea to designate female-only parking spaces.
'This treats female drivers as idiots'

Many Weibo users were quick to label the spaces as sexist and defend the ability of female drivers.

"It is frankly discrimination against women," a user named Nanyabianfu wrote.

"This treats female drivers as idiots.

"Women can do whatever men can do."

Another user, Wangyouxiaogaoderichang, said the special spaces should be changed to "novice parking".
Why women-only ride sharing services are revolutionary

Ride-sharing services for women only are not discriminatory. You only need to listen to women who feel unsafe catching cabs at night to understand why.

"'Female car parking spot is merely a form of indicating that female drivers are not skilled," they wrote.

While other users recognised the advantages of wider car spaces, they believed it discriminated against both genders.

"The design of the female parking spaces is a good and convenient design, but it is called the ladies parking space," user Caomuyiqiu_s wrote.

"If I am a man and I assume I am a novice driver, I cannot park my car in this wider parking space because I am not a woman. Am I discriminated against?"

Cities making public spaces more 'female friendly'

Women-only parking can be found in various designs and sizes across China and other countries including South Korea, where many are simply outlined in pink and marked with a pink skirt-wearing figure.

As a part of the 'Women-friendly Seoul' project launched in 2009, the South Korean capital introduced thousands of pink parking spots to improve safety and convenience for female drivers.

In China, airports in Beijing, Shenzhen, Wuhan and Guangzhou also offer female-only queues at security checkpoints that are staffed by female guards.

The lines were introduced to make female passengers feel more comfortable while being checked by security and to improve efficiency.

Women-only train and subway carriages have also been established in some countries including Egypt and Japan to combat sexual harassment.

In Japan, where groping on trains is a longstanding problem, platforms and train doors are marked with signs indicating where the special carriages are as well as the days and times they are available to women only.

On Cairo Metro trains, the middle two cars of every train are reserved for women.

Women-only ridesharing services are also taking off around the world, though the concept has also been described as sexist and discriminatory.

Australia's Shebah, which only hires and pick up women, was launched on International Women's Day last year.

They have a floor in 'The Mall' (Korat) solely for women drivers. The floor had many vacant spaces the other week when I went with the family but we couldn't park in them because I was driving. Now if my wife had driven the car there'd have been no problem in using them. Fcukin stupid.

They are kind of sexist, but when I see some of the drivers here in China, both men and women they should have men only and women only spots.

There is absolutely no patience here.. driving in a taxi is a nightmare.

As a very good driver with no accidents or tickets for the last 30 years, I'd in no way drive a car in China. Driving a scooter and bicycle is taking my life into my hands enough.

It is much more difficult to drive in a pair of stilettos so oversize car-spots are a perfectly sensible idea.

My mother could and used to drive a coach. Including reversing, although she would usually drive into the yard and let someone else turn it around and park.

So there is no excuse for women not being able to drive or reverse. Some men are rubbish at reversing.

I can see some logic about spaces being in a well lit area, with surveillance cameras or personnel as some men are a-holes but they don't need to be closer to the entrance.

This whole feminist stuff is bollocks. Some women want equality and others/most want more than equality.

Where's BLD's thread with the pics of the little Lao cuties driving big monster dump trucks the size of a small nation, as the blokes can't be trusted.

Certainly not Katie. It is far too dangerous.

That is why I am looking forward to the advent of the autonomous vehicle as it will free us all up to express ourselves in a way that more closely aligns to our inner sense of self and to explore the fluid nature of our identity instead of being constrained to traditional stereotypes by the practical requirements of foot pedal operation!

Agree, and if they are going to make women only spaces, they need to make men only spaces as well which just seems ridiculous.

Both men and women drive crazy in China..no rules, and not many cops around to keep in check.

Could do with another comma there, after "oversized". Fat women only? There's a PC problem right there.

How about "Asian only" carparks? Wide, room to manouvre parking spaces where double parking is never needed.

555 I was waiting for someone to jump in on that. Well done.

Why did she let someone else refuel and park? Because she she was and still is the boss's wife. Having inherited from her mother. If the yard was crowded she parked it in the first available spot and went home. She could reverse if she had to. You had to be able to do that to get your PSV (public service vehicle) license.
But yes as a relief driver she usually only drove one of the smaller ones.

    True, right.

What China really needs is more parking spots and not just spots for women only. People will literally park anywhere, because there are not enough spots. Sometimes I come home and cannot walk into my apartment, because cars are parked everywhere. They park on the sidewalks, and often park in the wrong direction.

Strictly from a business point of view. Women spend more money than men so it makes commercial sense to have "business class" parking for women-only at shopping malls. Put this together with good lighting and a sense of security and...
They could be, say, 1/2m wider but not so much that they actually look wider with instructions to drive face in and reverse out.

Those weren't empty spaces. That was the extra-large 'manoeuvre' area for the 4 parking spaces (after designing the parking area to accommodate imbecile female drivers, the planners realised that they only had room for 4 parking spaces!)

Yes, they can. Fact is, they need more parking spaces overall and not just female only spots.
Not all women drive shitty and certainly just as many men (especially in China), can't park a darn car.
