    The Fall of Rome

A worthy watch, some history with a flair and context for the present day.

Some good books on the subject already - but I'll watch.

    Thanks.

This kind of presentation is very off-putting. One knows the guy is a crackpot.
It doesn't mean his message is wrong (I don't know), but his presentation makes me tune out.

    Haven't watched the video Earl.

    Sorry mate

However, I was staying in a cheap backpacker place in New Orleans 20 odd years ago, and after being up all night was slumped on a sofa in the main area, half watching a black and white documentary on the subject.

Along came the cleaner (a proper old hippie), who stopped what he was doing, stared at the screen, and proclaimed...

"The US is in the same state now as at the beginning of the fall if the Roman empire"

    He then carried on mopping.

    Prophetic indeed.
Step by step, inch by inch, piece by piece.

Was that the "India House?" - the hostel in New Orleans. I stayed there.

I stayed in a couple of others there in NO in 2000.

    Good memories.

    Prophetic?

Yes, but it'l be after we are dead.

^ Can't remember what it was called mate, but I think they had a pond with some baby alligators. Might have been the Gainsville Green though...

And yes, most likely after we're dead.

Rome fell for many reasons, one was the up take of Christianity by Constantine. Parts of it now look like the barbarians have invaded and are taking over, 410 A.D. all over again. Oh it's Stephan can't sit through 2 hours of him what were his main points?

476 was the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, the Romans had long since decamped to the East. Even in 410, when Alaric sacked Rome itself, the city had long since ceased to be the capital of anything.

Everyone always forgets about the Eastern Empire. The final collapse of Rome was in the 15th Century. 2000 years is a pretty good run for any civilization.

I suppose discussing philosophy and the virtues of western civilization could be "off-putting" for many of the current crop of brainwashed consumer muppets.

You could be right. I don't know.
But for me listening to a crackpot who over-emphasises words for effect as if it's really really important is off-putting.
As I said, and you obviously missed, it's his presentation, not his content.

I refered to the fall of the City for the first time, not the Empire, we should have a crusade to capture Constantinople back and knock those minarets down.

Wouldn't virtues of Western civilisation be a term of deepest contradictory?

What passes for western civilization now in Europe and the USA is more like communism and fascism which is what destroyed the Rome Empire.
When I think of western civilization I think of ancient Greece, Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, the city state, and early Rome.

Molyneux is a screaming misogynist who says that every bad thing that ever happened is the fault of women. he makes St Paul look like Andrea Dworkin. Enjoy the "history" lesson.
