Any experience taking in stray cats? Feeling heartbroken atm

A bit of a story, but when I moved into this apartment six months ago, I would see a cat sitting outside on the motorbikes in front of my apt. I didn't realize at the time it was a stray cat. China has many stray cats. Almost as many cats as Thailand has soi dogs.

I would try to pet the cat, but it would run away. It was obviously not treated well at one point.
I saw it almost everyday after I would come home just sleeping on the scooters. I decided to start feeding it wet food every second day. Problem with that was a few other stray cats would come and try to eat the food too. I had a number of bowls break or fall between the scooters.

Sometimes it would sleep in the basket.

After I started feeding it, I was able to get closer and pet the cat. I even got to a point where it would meow when it saw me pass by. :(

I thought of taking it into my apartment, but was also thinking I'd have to take it to a vet first. As winter has now gotten cold I didn't see it for about a week. I kept thinking it was dead or the guards of the complex took it away. :(

Today, I was walking towards my apartment and the stray cat ran out of some little bushes next to my apartment and ran up to me meowing. Aww..

I picked it up and started petting it. I realized I want to take it in my apartment, but I don't know if I should take it to a vet first just in case. I don't know what kind of diseases cats can carry. The cat looks like it is clean enough and in good condition. It's eyes seem to have some dirt near them is all. Does anyone know if I should buy a cage and take it to a vet for check up before I bring it in my apartment? My apartment is pretty small and I don't know if it would be okay in here. I doubt it is litter trained either.

This is from today when it ran up to me.. I feel so bad not taking the cat inside because it is cold out below zero at nights lately.


Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. :(
I think I'll go down and feed it.

Don't worry about catching something from the cat. Take the cat into the apartment but he/she may freak out if you do. Typically hide under the bed or some place you will have trouble getting her out. May over time overcome natural fear of humans but likely take a long time. Once she is settled in take her to vet.

Will be a few crap messes to clean up but she will naturally use a litter box if available.

what do you need anyone to tell you?

feed it, get it a litter tray and take it to the vet.

we had a very small kitten walk into our place and the wife and i adopted it slowly , it was completely feral at the start and had bad eyes.
after feeding her she started to come back and meow for food.
she won, two months later we had a great little cat that was part of the family.
then a large tom walked into our driveway and died, we got rid of the dead cat but it had a disease which our kitten caught.
we took her to a vet and got medicine, she stayed ill. we ended up in a cat hospital in Hua HIn with her and she was diagnosed with Feline parvo, i had never heard of it.
however over the next few days she weakened and died.
the wife was devastated and i wasn't real impressed, it was a ripper of a cat.

moral of the story......... no more pets !

What does the rental contract say about animals?

adopt it - chinese stray cat will be a lucky cat - you'll love it and it may tolerate you (if you do everything for it)

I was reading that there are some diseases you can get like rabies and a few other things from their feces/urine.

I'm a bit hesitant because I'd like to take it to the vet first. Also, as Stroller pointed out, I don't know at the moment if I'm allowed pets in here (misplaced the rental agreement atm). Also, since I travel quite often, I'm worried about what I would do with the cat. All of these things I'm thinking about.
I would have to get a litter box/litter and a holder for the cat.

If you don't take it in, one of your neighbors will eat it. Either way problem solved.

The neighbors sometimes put dry food out for the cats. I haven't seen any recently, but someone else is caring for them at times.
I went to find the cat and it was gone. Maybe they go feed elsewhere in the complex as it is huge.

I had a kitten before... and it was sort of a nightmare. It was climbing up my curtains nad keeping me up at all hours, so I do worry about that type of experience. This is a young kitten, but not as young as the one I had. I'm not sure if this cat is a girl or boy. I'd assume a girl, as it looks low key, compared to the scrappy boy I had.

Hahah! I did hear the Chinese will eat pretty much anything, before I moved here. If it moves, they will eat it.

Take it to the vet first, then feed it well for a few weeks to fatten it up.

Aww, well you can always get a dog.
I was reading that it is easy to spread diseases from cat to cat, but not as high of a risk from cat to human.

I've decided I'm going to a cat store tomorrow and maybe buy a litter box and a few other things for the cat before I take it in.
I hope the person there speaks some English and I can talk to her about it.

Why are you heart broken? Did the last stray cat say she was moving in with you and quitting working the streets, but when you went out, she was out 5 minutes later being petted by the local motocy boys?

Anyway - take it in. give it a little box, and away you go. But really... what's the point. She might have kittens somewhere and they'll die because you stole her. Start with getting her neutered?

Toxoplasmosis, or crazy cat lady disease is a risk.
Google it. It can only reproduce in cats but humans can catch it and, very alien species-like, it affects your brain in such a way that you feel compelled to look after more cats, thus ensuring there are more hosts within which it can breed.

Cats will find a warm place to stay and will be fine. Just keep feeding her outside is my advice.

Adopted several cats actually- or been adopted by them. Nice pets, and great ratters/ mousers. Clean too, don't need much training. I say go for it.

I've wanted to take it in for a long time, and either was away or too busy. Also, figuring out if it is the best action for both.
