Thread: Anyone know what kind of stone this is?

Picked this up off the ground years ago in Kenya and have wondered since what it is. There had been a rainstorm which exposed loads of it near some road construction. Don’t reckon it’s precious because no one was scrambling around on the ground to collect it. Still, it’s an interesting color.

Looks like crystal of some sort to me.

Appears to be quartz.

Maybe amythyst.

I don’t really see formed crystals like I expect quartz would have.

I thought hydrated potassium silicate, although chemistry was my worst subject ever, so don't trust me on this.
Googling apophylite and looking at images appears to be the thing you're looking for.

Can you scratch glass (or steel) with it? If so, then it is most likely quartz. If not, it is probably calcite.
