Claims that Facebook is 'destroying how society works'

    .
I'll preface this by saying that I (David) don't have Facebook, nor Twitter, nor Snapchat nor ...
... TD is the closest I have to Social Media

Some of Facebook's former friends are starting to express some serious doubts about the
    social network they helped create.

    Key points:
    • Former Facebook VP Chamath Palihapitiya gave a talk at Stanford criticising the way the app works
    • "The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops [using Facebook creates] ... are destroying how society works," he said
    • Facebook says it was a "very different company" when Mr Palihapitiya worked there

The social media company (i.e. Facebook) has issued a statement hitting back at comments by former Facebook vice-president
Chamath Palihapitiya, who told an audience at Stanford last month the company was "ripping apart the social fabric of how society works".

"We curate our lives around this perceived sense of perfection because we get rewarded in these short-term signals — hearts, likes,
thumbs up — and we conflate that with value, and we conflate it with truth,"
    he said.

"And instead what it really is is fake, brittle popularity that's short-term and that leaves you even more — admit it — vacant and empty
before you did it, because then it forces you into this vicious cycle where you're like, 'What's the next thing I need to do now because I need it back?'

'How do we consume as much of your time as possible?'

But Mr Palihapitiya is not alone in his concern — the company's first president, Sean Parker, told a public forum last month that Facebook
exploited a "vulnerability in human psychology" to addict its users.

..but 666 friends can't be wrong

Agree entirely but for the kids it's part of the wallpaper and the constant need to have the latest gadget to read the latest update

Apart from the trolls and spam and ads there is the sheer tedium

Selfies of dull people posing , endless plates of food.

Hard to imagine anyone would pay to watch friends gurning or sub Luigi slop served on tampons worse Patty Plies

Of course this is a delivery mechanism for an ending stream of desire and consumption.

Give me some wit and repartee Dillinger, Cyrille neverna are preferable to this even or dog house hounds are ad free

Can you imagine if there were an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) that killed all electronics in the world ==> no more Facebook, no more mobile phones, no more TV, no more...

Could mankind survive? Probably 95% of the population would slit their wrists because they can no longer send photos of their breakfast to their friends in return for instant 'likes'.

Update: Although in a past life, I made $ USD millions from writing mobile phone application software (SMS), I don't use Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram or Facebook, other than to publicise my charity work and to seek donations. I use LinkedIn for business networking and that's it. I detest using technology when the KISS principle is the best option.

Social orders of a weak manipulated character are usually the ones that succumb to the invented dumbing down undertakings.

Analyzing the fuck outta most everything, unnecessarily.

Facebook blocks Australian users from viewing or sharing news

Facebook has blocked Australian users from sharing or viewing news content on the platform, causing much alarm over public access to key information.

It comes in response to a proposed law which would make tech giants pay for news content on their platforms.

Australians on Thursday woke up to find that Facebook pages of all local and global news sites were unavailable.

Several government health and emergency pages were also blocked - something Facebook later asserted was a mistake.

Those outside of the country are also unable to read or access any Australian news publications on the platform.

no - good - farcebook is not a site to get news from

I see the narrative being pushed by the fcukwit pollies and assorted talking heads is that farcebook has banned the news in australia

WTF - are people really that stupid

just go to the websites and look at the news

all the orgs and individuals that are upset have realised that their free marketing tool has stopped working

farcebooks news links on peoples feeds would have been based on algorithms as they know more about their users than their users know or would admit about themselves , and the echo chambers are really detrimental to a democratic society that has the responsibility to vote in actual useful representatives for their governing

again this all started as murdochs lickspittles were told to take money from the tech giants to prop up his ailing business model

these cnuts running the show have been told time and time again to just fcuking change the tax laws so all these multinationals are paying their fair share of tax from the money they are earning from australians
