    Asian Math

My daughter came home from Manila today, and proudly announced she had made me 7000 Peso. Cool, said I. How?

Well, I bought a new pair of sneakers (#20 by my rough count) and spent 1000+. If I had bought them here instead of in Manila, they would have cost 8000+. So, you made Peso 7000.

Some poor unsuspecting guy is in for a world of pain down the road...........

    She's an amateur.

Spent 1000, on designer discounted from 8000, which is bought in the sticks, would be 16000, means a saving of 15,000, but on top of that, they would last four times longer than the cheap ones in the maret which cost 250, so add another 1000 on top as well.

Smart in so many ways, yet incredibly gullible when it comes to 1960s marketing scams.

This is is the price you pay for the comfort of living in the developing/third world. They may dent your aspirations for her, but you remain as pragmatic as ever, while the women in your family roll their eyes at you. At least with the lads, you can take them to one side and have a man to man chat.

I once read a memeish thing before the internet. Maybe Readers Digest.
Basically it said the difference between men and women is this: A man will go to a hardware store and buy a tool or part he needs even if the thing is twice the price it should be. He needs it. A woman will see something on special and buy two of them because they're at a reduced price, even though she does not need them.

To be fair, it may not be Asian math, but female math.

I've a Thai friend who is always looking for and cashing in discount coupons. We go to have a coffee at a shop where she has a coupon. I order a small coffee. She tells me to order something more expensive, a fancy coffee. I don't want that, I want a small coffee, I tell her. But she has a discount coupon! She ends up ordering a coffee the size of a Big Gulp for me. I can't drink the thing and she paid more for it than she would have the small coffee I wanted. Doesn't make a bit of sense to me but she thinks she saved money.

@Davis - 20 pairs of sneakers/shoes! Your daughter is on her way to being Imeldific.

The female liking for shoes starts young. I remember when my niece was 4 or 5. Whenever we went to the dept store, she would go to the kids shoes section and try the different designs on display. No urging from me or her mom, that's just how her mind worked. Her elder bro would be tinkering in the toys section.

I don't go for the "buy 2 get 1 free" gimmicks. I am also past the "buy buy buy" phase. But don't ask me how many pairs of shoes I have.

Or paying for an "all you can eat" buffet and eating beyond being full. It's not as if you can store the food in your stomach for tomorrow.

Asian Math-20161219_112153-jpgI found this somewhat amusing while in Pakse. Next time I'll go in though I already have a pair.

@fish - in Tagalog, "titi" refers to the male organ. So in a Tagalog context, you already have it! (Only one, though, if I am not mistaken. Lol)

The Thai term for mortar & pestle "pokpok " also gives me the laughs. In Tagalog, it's slang for prostitute.

Davis, although this is a hardwired condition, fortunately it is manageable.

You just need to limit its effects unless it ends up like this when she goes for a job interview : (warning.....cringeworthy) https://vimeo.com/239050403/cdd07b248e

The really sad thing is that this is based on actual millenials. It's real.

Frugal The man walked into the house panting and almost completely exhausted. “What happened, honey?” his wife asked. “It's a great new idea I have,” he gasped. “I ran all the way home behind the bus and saved two dollars.” “That wasn't very bright,” replied his wife. “Why didn't you run behind a taxi and save ten bucks ...
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
