Wet myself at this teacher's spelling mistake

So I go into my grade 8 (13 years old - all girls) class today to find 2 words written on the whiteboard.

    "canute"
    "c u n t"

'Er, what is this?' I ask (worrying about what answer will be given)

'Our history lesson, our Myanmar teacher taught us all about King Canute and his nickname c u n t'.

So I am trying not to wet my pants at this point, and point out that his nickname was actually 'cnut' (which is almost as bad....), and please try not to write c u n t on the whiteboard.

'So what does c u n t mean?' ask the girls. (They are not taking the piss, as 13-year old Thai schoolgirls might, they genuinely don't know the word)

Well, I didn't 'go there' of course, but directed them to look in their pocket dictionaries (because I guessed that such small dictionaries wouldn't list this word).

    I guessed wrong!!

Wonder if they teach about Cnut better than they do in western schools? Cnut was not being arrogant when he tried to stop the tide coming in, but was in fact demonstrating that Kings were not gods, had no unearthly powers, as had been assumed by the turnip eaters.

English culture is based on closet homosexuality, of course they hate any reference to female genitalia.

    I guess that's a good explanation,

In French, le con ou le conne is used quite regularly without raising any eyebrows

For me, the funny part was that the 'mature' Myanmar teacher had no idea of the meaning of the word that she had written on the board.

Next week's history lesson is about Mullah Faruck, fondly known by his nickname of Mullah F u c k

Hmm.. let me think. She's a History teacher, but all classes are taught in English. She reads and writes English at an advanced level.

Maybe, just maybe, you'd think that she would have encountered the word c u n t in her studies of English?

Au contraire! Cvnt is a term of endearment between blokes in the UK. Its just the bunched up panty pooftahs in Aufalia and Merkini land that take offence from it.

IMO she's nowhere near as dumb as the middle aged male western teacher who suggested in class that a group of 13 year old girls look up the word 'c u n t' in a dictionary.

That might be a difficult one to explain away to the Pricipal, no?

Again, why would she? Do you think her History lesssons should start with "alright, you cunts, sit up and listen!"? Shockingly many people who have studied languages at advanced level are still unaware of many of the obscenities, colloquialisms, and slang terms associated with that language. Instead they concentrate on learning to read, speak, and write the language correctly and clearly rather than on learning the idiolects of drunken yobbos.

And, as the proper spelling of Canute is Cnut, it seems to me the history teacher got it right and the student forgot the correct spelling.

    Oh dear.....

    Do's and Do Not's

    Do’s
Remember that ‘Bamar’ (or ‘Burman’) and ‘Burmese’ are not the same. A Bamar is a member of the majority ethnic group. ‘Burmese’ refers to citizenship or the language. People from minority ethnic groups can be very offended if one equates the two terms or implies that only Bamar can be Burmese. This exclusion can be deeply hurtful and referential to the real persecution people have experienced.
Refer to people by their chosen identity. Many from ethnic minorities may not actually want to be referred to as ‘Burmese’ and will prefer to use their ethnic identity, e.g. Karen, Chin, Rohingya. The Karen people may be particularly opposed to being called Burmese.
Be sensitive to the reality that many Burmese living in other countries may have experienced trauma of some kind. This includes abuse by security forces, witnessing the death of family members, forced separation from family and impoverishment from a lack of basic resources. Political dissidents may have experienced interrogation, imprisonment or even torture.

Consider that upfront honesty is not always appreciated. The Burmese are generally quite discreet unless they know someone very well.
If discussing a sensitive topic, add lots of reassurance throughout conversation to put your Burmese counterpart at ease
    .
Expect to be asked where you are going, when you last ate and what you are doing quite often. This is a cultural norm and is not intended to be intrusive.
Dress modestly with your shoulders, chest and upper thigh covered.

    Do not’s
Do not assume that a Burmese person’s visible behaviour will indicate how they really feel. They generally have a very sunny demeanour – smiling and laughing a lot – which can lead foreigners to believe they are unaffected by conversation. In some cases, foreigners can feel overly reassured by a Burmese person’s cheerfulness and jump to the conclusion that they’re comfortable enough to joke about, criticise or discuss things that actually offend or hurt their counterpart more than they realise.
Avoid being openly critical or pointing out mistakes. The Burmese tend to take criticism quite personally. For example, if they have taken you to a restaurant and you do not like a dish served, commenting on its quality may be taken as a comment on their skills as a host even though they did not prepare the dish. Such occurrences can quickly cause a Burmese person to lose face.
Do not push a Burmese person to talk about politics. Though the situation is improving in Myanmar, decades of censorship and persecution created a culture of silence. Free speech is not taken for granted and some Burmese may still feel uncomfortable telling you their opinion out of fear for the consequences, especially if they have family remaining in Myanmar.
Do not eat food or drinks that have been left out as spiritual offerings.
Avoid complaining unless it is totally necessary. Many Burmese have endured a lot of hardship and are very stoic about their problems. Whinging is frowned upon.
Do not raise your voice or lose your temper. Losing control of one’s emotions even in the most frustrating situations is a sign of poor upbringing and is likely to make you lose face in a Burmese person’s eyes.
Avoid talking about yourself too much or boasting. The Burmese are especially humble people.

Dillinger, think you're going a bit over the top there mate.

Rude word on the whiteboard, students have a good laugh, we talk about where/when this word should be used, end of story.....

    Forgot to add:

Cut out this crap about Burmese culture. These students all have the latest mobile phone, all have laptops and they are picked up by Daddy in his Merc or have a private driver. They have been schooled in English since a few years old and already knew other swear words!

Don't really expect Western school systems to pursue such esoteric subject matter as an obscure, or even well known, Burman king, do ya?

I'd have done what I always do when any teacher has been ill-mannered enough not to wipe their board clean when finished. It happens a lot in the ME.

I'd have wiped it and got on with my lesson, after clarifying with the girls how it had got there.

Seriously...that could have developed into a world of shit for you. Glad it seems that it probably hasn't.

Absolutely no way. This is not a PC school in Surbiton. If I considered it 'risky' to broach the subject, then I would have just cleaned the board. I know my students very well and provide them with the information and explanations that they should know as teenagers and soon-to-be young adults.

Not all educated people using English as a second language know slang, especially the "dirty" slang. Heck, I didn't know about Poms, Chavs, Convicts and socks with sandals until I began reading TD.

For that matter, I only read about the "rusty trombone" and "mooning" on this site. So it's possible that the teacher (female) didn't really know the C word. She may not also have grown up as privileged (unlike your students now, since they're in an international or private school, so they must have rich parents). Maybe the teacher grew up poor & didn't have much money to watch Hollywood movies (and maybe they weren't shown on TV either).
