When I was studying for my MA in Thai Studies at Chula (got the name-dropping out of the way!!), that book was on our list of recommended books to read. Our Thai lecturer (who was an M.R.), stressed that we should only read the book when we were not in Thailand.there's a bit of a book about a bloke who doesn't smile too much. An excellent read if you can find a copy but be careful most copies are more than a little fragile.
On a visit to London, I bought the book and read it cover to cover, then tore off the covers and smuggled it back into Thailand. Don't have it anymore, (although it would be OK to read here in Myanmar).
Groping women when you're old is fine - everyone thinks you're senile
Location influences my choice of map purchase, but not novels.
Maybe you should test that theory by reading that book on the skytrain next time you're in BKK.
If you're not paralysed with boredom by it after 30 pages, like I was.
It's a good book showing the life of Issan in the past Things have changed a lot since then but the country life descriptions still ring true. Another good read is Venerable Father by Paul Breiter about a young American's time as a monk under the tutelage of Ajan Chah. His descriptions of the mental and physical struggles he goes through are excellent and his descripion of Ajarn Chah reminds me of my old headmaster-tough love!
