Should gambling be legalised in Thailand?

In the 1920's we had prohibition which made the drinking problem worse in the USA.

The criminalisation of gambling in Thailand drives it underground and creates a host of problems without any solutions.

When will the penny drop that the only winner is the bookmaker.

Yeah F it if people want to throw away money, Thailand may as well get some tax off it. There is a casino on every corner of the north eastern US now mostly full off low income types spending their rent money.

It didnt make the problem worse. People didnt start drinking because there were no pubs.

The Thasi dont have the right mindset to be allowed gambling. They believe they could be dead tomorrow and live for the day.

Gambling but pretend it isn't. Make it legal. Every village around us has an illegal gambling venue allowed to run by the powers that be. For a percent of the take of course. Nice system. Folks lose, borrow from the gambling organizers using land as loan collateral, lose more, can't pay loan, lose land, and end up drunk living in a grass hut.

Legal gambling won't change those addicted but gov might as well benefit rather than the local gangsters and corrupt local authorities.

Course it should be legal. It happens anyway so why make people criminals for it?

Quite right. Take the crime out of it. Can't do that though because then the multi-billion legal and penal industries would lose money.

I distrust the ethic of gamblers however as others note a ban just transfers the problem underground and a revenue for gangs/corruption kickbacks. Also issue of lost revenue.

Not sure Thais will run it well its a scourge in Oz with pokie (gaming machines) and in UK high streets.

While gambling is legal in most of Europe it doesn't seem out of hand in France Portugal or Holland.

Perhaps the solution is a really high stake lottery like US and Spain which wiil be the goto for the poor housewife who just dreams of enough to divorce?

The inveterate addicts who chase the loss alcoholics will bet on flies on a table so they are just a lost cause.

The village money lenders also reflect the scale of the problem in an area with large Chinese influence and their devotion to money

Interestingly one of the main venues here for the games are "funeral pittis " where normal life is suspended for all night boozing wailing and general insanity.

On balance I can give a toss, legalize , yet I think vested interests will oppose and they have the grease to pay.
I used to have a job at a calendar factory.
    I got the sack because
I took a couple of days off.

Legalise gambling and prostitution. Organise both sports properly and tax it.

One might consider the central government, local gangsters, and local authorities all one and the same - extended family.
Any change from these relationships would come at a great cost.

Tax it lol - yes we must all pay the tithe to our masters thats what we should do.

We pay tax. We allow private banks to create money out of thin air for free as debt with interest atteched. The amount of free money those cvnt creates each year far outweighs the amount of tax we pay. Get rid of all tax and have the treasury create money for free with no interest and not as debt, and use it to support all the things tax half pays for.

I should be illegal for me to wager in Thailand, as I'd lose lots of money there too. Tis a verifiable mugs game, sadly.
