    Thai women are fat.

The days of skinny Thais are over - Thai women named second fattest in Asia

Thai women are now officially the second fattest group of people in Asia.

Only Malaysian women tip the scales worse on average.

The head of Thailand's Diabetes' Association painted a grim picture of a nation getting more and more obese.

Poor diet and insufficient exercise are to blame - with diabetes, heart conditions and blocked arteries all rising rapidly as a result.

Wannee Nitthiyanan was speaking to Daily News about the obesity explosion confronting Thailand and its overstretched health care system.

She said that 8,000 people were dying each year in Thailand from diabetes. Figures showed that in the five years from 2009 to 2014 the number with the disease in Thailand went from 3.3 to 4.8 million.

But worst of all today 2 million people don't even know they have the condition that means they are not receiving treatment and can develop other serious conditions.

And 7.7 million are at risk of developing diabetes in the kingdom.

Wannee said that the problem of overweight people was worse in the towns and cities than elsewhere. She called the rise in obesity an explosion.

And the problem was especially prevalent in the female population making Thai women the second fattest group in Asia after Malaysians.

They are also second in the death rate stakes from such diseases as diabetes and heart and artery conditions.

She blamed poor diets and insufficient exercise for the diabetes epidemic that is costing the country tens of billions of baht a year in out-patient and in-patient health care.

I'm currently in an office with 10 Thai women around me. 2 are overweight, but not fat. 1 is a bit podgy. The rest are slim.

Probably better numbers than in.... say..... Huddersfield.

Around where I live I have to agree that the majority seem obese. To go to a shop over the other side of the road they take a m/c. They do fcuk all all day but sit in hammocks or those bamboo gazebos. You'll never see a Thai woman walk anywhere around here. Won't be long now before Isaan women lose the ability to walk.

I'll get shot down by GF & KT for this but Filipinas must surely the fattest women in SEA now. It never use to be that way, when I first went there the women had fantastic figures and trust me, I saw a lot of them up close. Nowadays, it's a very different proposition. I can only put this down to the abundance of fast-food joints everywhere now, and how the locals really enjoy it. The national dish these days is probably Jollibee spaghetti, which is so sweet it's pretty much inedible to Foreigners but the locals can't get enough of it .

Thai girls (in my experience) will politely eat a small serve of something if you take them to a fast-food joint, but then they'll get some local food not long after. I'm just not seeing them turn into blimps like their sistahs across the pond...

    Had to google that. lol.

Was back there in April, and tbh a bit of decent weather and sunshine brought them out of the factories and chip shops, and have to say that the trend is tending towards slimmer there and getting much fatter in LoS. Especially in Bangkok
Having said that, my office in Rayong has some slim-gazelle stunners, atm. Off the charts..

I hope you and yours are careful on the roads down there, Kmart.

Thai drivers are now officially the worst in the world, and Rayong is apparently the worst area in Thailand...

A lot of heifers down south here. Wife and I have an expression, "bla waan, song kha", two-legged whale. Wife is no lightweight, mind you, and we're not into body-shaming, but the number of morbidly obese people (not just women) is getting up there with the US. Not quite yet, though.

I'd venture to say that there may be more boys that are morbidly obese.
Sugar? Fried food? Lack of excersise? Combination of all 3?
What is clear is that Thais are not genetically skinny, as was once perceived.

Yeh. Doesn't feel any worse than anywhere else in Thailand, tbh.. As long as you give a wide berth to the kamikaze passenger vans and mummy's boy racers (little shopping trolley cars, only with lots of stickers), then its generally okay. *touchwood*

My daughter's school friends are in and out of here - most 17 or 18. Unusual to see a thin one. No real fatties, but some solid kids.

The men and the children can be equally so, as you say.

A little persuasion usually invokes a weight loss if you are concerned.

    One outta ten.
    That's about right.

Ripe enough for the officialdom to create something of it and pretend there's an issue and invent subliminal social panic.
A few girls in the population are a bit plumb - even overweight - naturally, this would be reflective of the whole female population.
    Wrong.

Guess these experts aren't observing too carefully, are they....

@headworx - no grief from me. I somehow agree with you, that there are more fat flips now than before. Like Davis, I see lots of teens/early 20s ppl who are "solid". When I was that age, most of us were stick thin. Yes, Jollibee, McD, BK, Pizza Hut, Shakeys, even Yellow Cab (higher end) are all to blame. In all the malls, you'll see most of these fast food joints. I think it's not just fast food though. These young adults are of the YouTube & FB generation. They hardly play outside anymore. Instead they are inside, watching TV or using their gadgets.

When I first went to Vietnam in 2005, I was amazed at all the super slim ladies. The sales ladies in uniforms, they didn't have the "tummy roll" even while seated. Ten years later, I visited again. There were still a lot of slim ppl, but I noticed more proportion of plump individuals.

Comparing Bkk ladies with MNL ladies (on the street), I'd say that Bkk ladies are generally slimmer and to my eyes, more fashionista.

In Kuala Lumpur, I noticed many plump Malay ladies (with big butts). Most of the Chinese Malays were slim.

Btw, I'm no lightweight either. As you've seen in some pics, I'm "solid" too. Blame it on balut.

I could have sent you anyone of a dozen links to the story and all would have been ridiculed by yourself. How about https://www.adb.org/sites/default/fi...adbi-wp703.pdf or https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF03327467
