THE deadly plague outbreak gripping Madagascar could still spread, according to the World Health Organisation which needs £3million to prevent more deaths.
At least 165 have been killed by the “medival disease” with an estimated 2,000 infected.

Infection and immunity expert Dr Matthew Avison, of the University of Bristol, this week told Daily Star Online the health crisis is likely to “get worse before it gets better”.
Doctors have issued warnings about a new strain of the airborne disease which “can kill in three hours”, local reports say.
And now the World Health Organisation has said it needs £3million to stop the black death’s spread.

An update from WHO said: “While progress has been made to control the outbreak of plague in Madagascar, the possibility of future flare-ups cannot be ruled out.
“Notwithstanding the financial support and contributions from partners, WHO urgently requires an additional $4million (£3m) to sustain response operations in the next three months of the plague outbreak in Madagascar.
“The funding is needed to interrupt ongoing transmission, provide care for those affected by the disease, reduce the risk of international spread and provide effective coordination and operations support.”
All schools in the country had been disinfected and 8,000 community leaders had been trained to spot signs of the disease.
Antibiotics can cure the disease if given to patients quickly.
But scientists are worried about the disease becoming resistant to antibiotics and therefore increasing the risk of death.
Disease expert Paul Hunter, from University of East Anglia, previously told Daily Star Online that the more antibiotics are used to treat the illness, the more ineffective they’ll become.

“As with any disease, it’s a real worry that it mutates and become untreatable,” he said.“If it reaches the UK, Europe or the US it would be similar to the Ebola outbreak.
“We would probably have a few isolated cases but it shouldn’t spread like it has in Madagascar.”The airborne pneumonic plague can be spread by coughing, sneezing, spitting and other contact with bodily fluids.

It is related to the Black Death which killed around 200 million people in Europe and Asia between 1346 and 1353.

Officials from WHO warned there is a risk the disease could spread to other continents.

No. Even if a resurrected version of this deadly bug escaped the ultra-secure lab, we'd be okay. Today's world is a very different than medieval Europe, and leaps in public health and better living conditions would blunt the disease's spread. And antibiotics would surely snuff it out.

Imagine Tel Aviv on a busy Friday evening. All it takes is the bacteria and a smart guy to devise how to dispense it and a few dumb mules to execute the plan. Nobody would know until people started falling over, and I daresay antibiotic supplies would run out very quickly.

WHO continues to support the Ministry of Public Health and other national authorities in Madagascar to monitor and respond to the outbreak of plague. From 6 to 17 November 2017, 216 cases of plague (1 confirmed, 20 probable and 195 suspect) were reported to WHO. The date of onset of the last case of bubonic plague was 7 November 2017 and the last confirmed case of pneumonic plague was reported on 14 November 2017.

From 1 August to 17 November 2017, a cumulative total of 2 267 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of plague, including 195 deaths (case fatality rate 9%), have been reported from 55 of 114 (48%) districts in Madagascar.

Analamanga Region in central Madagascar has been the most affected, with 68% of all recorded cases. Since the beginning of this outbreak, the vast majority of cases have been treated and have recovered. As of 17 November 2017, only people were hospitalized for plague. There has been no international spread outside the country.

The majority of the reported cases (1 732, 76%) have been clinically classified as pneumonic plague, 327 have been classified as bubonic plague (14%), one was septicaemic, and 207 have not yet been classified (further classification of cases is in process). Eighty-one healthcare workers have had illness compatible with plague, none of whom have died.

Of the 1 732 clinical pneumonic cases, 389 (22%) have been confirmed, 612 (35%) are probable and 731 (42%) remain suspected (additional laboratory results are in process). Thirty isolates of Yersinia pestis have been cultured and are sensitive to all antibiotics recommended by the National Plague Control Program.

Of the 7 270 contacts identified during this outbreak, about 99% (7166) have completed their 7-day follow up and a course of prophylactic antibiotics, and eleven contacts have developed symptoms compatible with plague and became suspected cases. On 17 November 2017, all 33 contacts currently under follow-up were reached and provided with prophylactic antibiotics.
