SKkin why not rent one and see how she likes it? It might just be a status thing? I've honestly had the b st Summer of my later life in this thing. Far better than being on a boat

On board the ferry from italy to Greece. You can opt to sleep in an open deck onboard the moho. Great way to travel. Circa 200 euros each way. Bari to Igoumenitsa out. I came back Patras to Bari as it means an early evening departure and lunch time arrivsl. Very civilised

We had a used one when my daughters were young(until they wanted to be at home 24/7 by the phone, boys, etc) that we went on weekend jaunts with and sometimes our vacations. I brought it up then that I'd like to live in one and vagabond around the country when we got older. She wasn't having it.

I had a gas job RV with a big block Chevy 454 that sucked the gas down like nobody's business. I think it got 6 miles per gallon if I was lucky. On a windy day even less. It had the propane fridge, stove top and oven. Which if you used the oven it would get rather warm inside. So we mostly grilled things outside. It also had a gas generator so you could provide your own electricity.

All in all the thing was a money pit, but I loved it. We mostly would go on weekends to the State Park campgrounds here in the region I live in. We did go to the Disney World campground one year...about 900 miles one way. It cost me almost as much in gas as it did for the Disney World tickets and other associated costs.

It was a Cruise Air "Georgie Boy" and looked almost exactly like this one on the left:

If I were able to talk the wife into it, something like this diesel pusher would be my dream ride:

    Highlights of the six months

    - exploring various small towns in France. They mostly have camping car stops "aires" often in scenic spots on edge of town and staggering distance from local restaurants

    - breaking down in Rome and being forced to spend a week exploring Rome city centre in a hotel waiting for parts (clutch pipe for hydraulic clutc slave cylinder)

    - greece in April and May. Swimming across deserted bays. A moho is easily secured in a parking lot for 5 euros a day so being able to hop on the five hour bus for a few days as tourists in Athens

    - Ardeche region. Swimming in crystal clear stretches of river. Great food

    - Haute Alpes. In August the only site that had space was naturist and on a huge lake up at a bit of altitude meant it was cooler too. A month swimming a couple of miles a day and getting a veryball over tan.

    - lake east of Limoges. Similar to above but chilly andvsuper refreshing

    - staying almost on the beach at Dunkirk Walking along the huge expanses of sand at low tide. Visiting the Getman Atlantic wall forts there

I guess my question was, is diesel still cheaper than gas in Europe? Or the other way around...

Looks great for US. For Europe something smaller under7 m ideally is way to go imo

id have thought teenage kids would love it. The French sites in particular are really geared up for them with sports, social areas, evening events.

as for wifely things....csmping n cycling in France doesn't have to be all cassoulet and shitting into a bucket

My plan was to sell our house and live in the RV permanently. That's where she balked.
I'm not posh enough to have both the house and the diesel RV.

In the UK they are pretty much the same price. Same as you say in the States originally. Much cheaper. Of course, once a load of people got diesel rides the price went up.

This was before the mobile phone era. If we would have had mobiles they would have probably been fine with it as they got older.
With boys I'm sure it's a different story.

Diesel got more expensive than gas here when the low sulphur diesel requirements went into effect. More refining costs was the excuse for the increase in price if I remember correctly.

    Bari to Igoumenitsa out..
That brings back memories of my childhood holidays in the late 60's and early 70's in Greece during the long summer holiday (my father was a university professor and got these long breaks).

We'd pack our suitcases, get on the train from Leicester to St. Pancras, then hop onto the train for Dover, nice ferry journey across the channel and then the train to Paris to the Gare de Nord. Taxi across town to catch the train to Brindisi in south Italy. We would spent that night and all the next day travelling in the train across southern France, through Switzerland and wake up the next morning by the Italian lakes. Then the train would continue all the way down the Italian coast until it reached Brindisi in the evening.

Off the train and into the ferry to Corfu, sleeping in the empty swimming pool on deck (my parents were clearly saving on room fees...).

Next morning, we would dock in Corfu Town and then get on the local bus to the northern village of Kassiopi, (which is now a very popular tourist resort, but was a sleepy village in those days).

Then 4 - 8 weeks of lazing on the beach and snorkeling, whilst my dad marked exam papers and drank copious amounts of wine. I'd spend time catching bugs and butterflies, and drowning them in formaldehyde to add to my collection.

In the evening, wonderful local Greek food and Zorba dancing in the local taverna.

Those holidays were I suppose, very similar to the childhood of Gerald Durrell, as told in 'My Family & Other Animals'.

Great childhood memories - about 10 years ago, I almost bought a Greek island to live on...

It was originally 550 quid but then I realised id done the maximum 3k miles so had to pay for 9k miles then cost me an additional wad to get recovery in France as a 5 t vehicle. Without looking it up I think about 1k a year with full recovery assistant and a decent mileage allowance in Europe

Wow. That's a serious RV lost n found. Brought back a few memories of the one i bought while travelling for 6 months in Canada and the states. All those years ago. I was about 26 I seem to recall. Paid 5000 USD in Seattle for an old RV hooked up to a dodge tradesman. It had a serious V8 and got shit mileage but at that time gas was a buck a gallon. Americans considered that to damn expensive and were off loading the RVs for whatever they could get. For me it saved me a fortune in hotel bills. I would simply pull over in a nice spot and camp a night or 2 Barbie a steak and swirl a few beers. Could shower and shit in there to. Once a month I would call into an RV park and connect the pipe that was housed in the bumper and empty the poop tank. Tell large stories to the snowbirds in the RV park and be on my way again. Damn thing was 22ft ended up selling it for 4500 USD after having it 6 months. Bloody good memories of that trip. Thanks for the thread lost n found

It's a lifestyle I could get used to. I discovered aspects of Europe that I thought no longer existed.

The machine is German. It's an absolute joy to drive The height gives view over hedgerows that make the journey interesting and the seats with armrests are like armchairs

ive also discovered a new interest in open water swimming. Swimming up and down the lakes in the morning calm was magical. The quality of food was also remarkable after tears in Thailand and then E Med

As far as cost, my own moho was 110 k new in 2011. After 11.5 k mil s they were asking 70k for it They dropped it a few k for a promo. I agreed 58kincluding nearly 1k worth of extras with the lpg cooking conversation after some poker faced negotiations

Soft, slightly peaty water. About 15C and heaven to swim to far end and back each day.

^That's not too far off from the first RV I had...I was afraid to take it too far away from home. That one was a Dodge Champion.

One thing I found with mine(of course it wasn't German built) was that the more it sat around unused the more things went wrong and needed fixed. If we used it on a regular basis it seemed to be good for it and not near as many problems. Of course yours is much newer than mine was at the time so that will probably help.

It broke down twice. Both occasions due to the failure of a hydraulic pipe to clutch slave cylinder

in Rome they loaded it onto a regular recovery truck In France it needed a bigger truck and it was at that point I found out about 500£ limit on recovery. The actual cost was 900£.

Otherwise only minor stuff. The lcd touch display for the heating and water died after being left in van in Greece for a couple of weeks (heatstroke?), a door handle needed tightening but that's about it after 7500 miles through UK and Europe in 8 months
