Coin Collections - they are so Yesterday! So, what do you collect?

Ok, I'll fess up ... I have started a modest collection.

My Dad was a Stamp Collector, my Uncle left me his (very modest) coin collection ... secretly, I don't think I was his favorite Nephew.

So, I've added few coins to that collection, and I've enjoyed the process.

If only my Grand-Daddy had the foresight to buy a 1930 Penny which is valued, uncirculated @ over $300,000

    So, what do you collect

Some collect Puppies. Some, like me, just like to play with them

    Other - Camel Toes

Here are a few weird and wonderfull collections

Condiment Packets ... think that's not big?

    • A McDonald's stunt to bring back a rare condiment for a day backfired as most customers were left empty-handed
    • McDonald's announced it was bringing back its once-popular Szechuan sauce in limited supply on October 7
    • The condiment received widespread attention on social media earlier this year thanks to popular U.S. science fiction animation comedy "Rick and Morty"

But, for me the prize go to the Guinness World record Holder of Barf (air-sickness) bags!

So ... what do you collect or know of someone who collects the Weird and Wacky?
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

when I lived in the UK, I used to collect disguised firearms.

Some were of an obsolete caliber, and therefore didn't require any type of firearms licence.

Others used readily-available shotgun cartridges, and therefore needed a special Part IV firearms licence, because ownership of disguised weapons was normally absolutely forbidden. Part IV licences were usually issued for machine guns! At gun auctions, I was usually the only person legally allowed to bid for the disguised weapon, and so I could often buy them at the opening bid price.

I had about 40 such weapons in my collection.

Some were shooting-stick shotguns (9mm calibre)

Many were disguised as walking sticks

    Some were disguised as umbrellas

Coin Collections - they are so Yesterday! So, what do you collect?-gun2-jpg

Some were disguised as fountain pens

Some were like blowpipes, with hidden darts.

It was an amazing collection. When I emigrated to Thailand in 2002, I wasn't allowed to bring these weapons. Rather than have them destroyed by the UK authorities, I was allowed the option to donate the collection to the Tower of London Museum, which I did....

PS - When I was studying at college in London, a girlfriend of mine used to collect airline barf bags....

When I was a kid, I used to collect Nazi stuff - helmets, badges, flags, uniform bits, stuff like that. I lived in Tunis at the time, only about 15 years or so after the end of the war. The souk was full of stuff scavenged from battlefields. Probably would be a collection worth some $$$ today if I still had it.

Can't confess to collecting them myself but I have a stamp collection 2 large suitcases full of the damn things, combination of albums and first day covers, thought I'd hit the jackpot when looked through them as a couple of penny blacks in there but a quick Google sadly informed me they are only worth about 20 quid.

One of my saddest losses in my many moves was my uk coin collection. In those days you could find a coin in your change that was over 100 years old.

That, to me was frigging amazing.

I have a decent coin collection here. There are dozens, if not hundreds of different 10 baht coins, and i have a fair collection. Have a few decent coins, one rama v if i remember correctly.

Its all become a bit debased here, "special" coins about every two minutes. Kind lost interest, although the missus collects all the new bank notes. Weird stuff like 90 baht notes etc.

I collect coins and notes from other countries (and my own). Also some refrigerator magnets and keychains of places. Some I've bought, some were given as gifts.

    No-one collecting Playboys?

The first one since the death of the Magazines founder is being billed as a 'Collectors Issue'.

I came across when I was looking for images for this thread ... https://teakdoor.com/the-teakdoor-lou...ansgender.html (Playboy has featured its first transgender 'playmate' centrefold !)

I've a few vintage motorcycles an old (76) Chevrolet C10 pickup truck and a 73 Ford Mustang fastback.

A hell of a record collection and several portable record players as well as a Zenith console stereo that I keep in the clubhouse with some old instruments and stuff.

I have a coin collection but haven't looked at it for years. Some German coins from around 1919ish.

As a kid I had a knife collection but I parted it out mostly.

I have some Beatles cards that my aunt gave me years ago. Oh and Star Wars cards as well as lots of books and magazines. Yes Playboy's still in the plastic mailing wrapper unopened.

My father gave me a few old riffles and a beer sign collection.

I also collect fishing stuff like lures rods and reels and various bycycles only a half dozen or so.

Anybody interested in a 1957 Mercury Mark 25 outboard motor, I've a spare parts motor to go with it. For the right price I'll throw in a Miami runabout from the same area.

Miss fish collects shoes and cloths. Don't ask me why.

Accumulated over last 6wks or so, I just toss 'em in each day, about 900 Bahts worth so far. 10s and 5s go towards water machine and laundry and the rest I cash them in every so often to top up my bts/mrt cards. Security guys changes them happily.

Those pathetic annoying little brown satang coins go into another box for erm....I dunno yet

I collect coins. The whole point is that they are yesterday. I can hold a coin that was used to buy lunch the day Caeser was assassinated or that were used to pay rent when the gates of thermopylae were manned.

Perth Mint's pink Argyle diamond-encrusted coin dazzles collectors at World Money Fair

The Jewelled Phoenix coin, inset with pink Argyle diamonds, is priced at $188,000.

The Perth Mint has revealed the world's first pavé-set, Argyle pink diamond gold coin at the prestigious 47th World
Money Fair held in Berlin last week.
Each 99.99 per cent pure gold coin, known as the Jewelled Phoenix, has been inset with purplish, pink Argyle
diamonds and was priced at $188,000.
And with only eight coins produced, that makes it one of the rarest collectable coins in the world.

"We sourced the diamonds from the Argyle mine and of course they're very rare so it adds to the prestige and the
rarity of this set," group manager of Minted Products, Neil Vance, said.

"The phoenix is made of 16 carat rose gold [and] we put in 89 fancy purplish, pink diamonds [with] approximately
    1.22 carats on each coin.

"We certainly managed to find some new collectors for the coins because of the diamonds but we also love the fact
that we're working with two prestigious West Australian brands that go very well together."

I have a friend who's hobby is to fill coin books with coins he gets from different banks.
He goes to the banks and buys $50 worth of coins, then sorts through them and fills coin books and sells them on ebay.
Seems like a lot of work to me for a small profit.

Personally, I collect license plates and PEZ dispensers although I quite buying them when the price went up about 15 years ago.
THey are dust collectors (the PEZ) so, I now just keep them in a box.
I imagine some are worth some money as they are old, but I almost never look at them.
And the license plates started out from cars I owned in the past and then ones I found on the side of the road when I walk (I walk a lot)
I probably have 60 or 70 of them but they too, just sit in a box somewhere.
Now, guitars? I don't see them as collectors items, but I do have a bunch of them now. (4 acoustics, 2 electrics, 2 basses, and a uke)

Then set up a youtube channel and make millions from satangs

Back on topic, i collect rare vinyl.

    Personally, I collect license plates
A teacher friend of mine in Yangon collects and sells Burmese licence plates. He apparently has a deal with the local vehicle registration office who sell him (for a beer or 2), obscure licence plates from dustcarts etc. (Actually, any Burmese licence plate is pretty obscure..).

He sells them on ebay for about $500 each....

The non ferrous satang coins are quite usefull as one can solder then to things. The others can be drilled and used as washer!

I find it another anomaly of Thailand that Tesco will give satang coins as change but will not accept them in payment. TIT

Could say I collect maps, mentally anyway.

I used to spend hours killing time in Stamfords, near Covent Garden. Still do when l'm in town. For example I know the road layout of Holloway from 1912 and track layout of Camden town station so well l can draw my own

I grew up in Germany and had at one time an impressive collection of bills and coins from all over Europe and beyond. I scoured coin shops all over Germany and the pride of my collection was some coins from Nazi Germany. Sadly my younger brother stole my collection when I was 19 and used the money to buy cannabis.

I also collected firearms, post cards, stamps, buffalo pennies, comics and of course baseball cards. I let go of almost all of them at some point in the past. Currently I collect watches, knives and have only a few firearms.

*edit* I also inherited both Playboy and National Geographic collections but no longer have those either.
