^^ It's a bit odd to ask why somebody is working as a teacher and then to dismiss the pleasure of doing a little to help other people as a possible justification.

^^ If you're absolutely determined to be some kind of ultra-extreme caricature of the arsehole whose only goal in life is maximizing your income then doubtless a lot of life choices are hard to make sense of, but they're not bullshit because of that.

I am retired and about to relocate from Thailand to Indonesia. The major expense will be property rental.
I presently have an adequate bungalow in a decent quiet location close to the beach. The village has sufficient amenities for a comfortable lifestyle. Bottom line, I've been here for over 8 years and I'm bored, especially with Thai bureaucracy.
My bungalow is spacious but sparsely furnished, and in common with most Thai rentals, the landlord is averse to spending any money. He employs his dim brother to fix anything wrong with plumbing or electrics using a wrench and a lump hammer.
It was shabby when I negotiated a lower rent, then redecorated at my own expense.
I move out next week.
In contrast all the monthly rentals I recently viewed in Indonesia, while costing more. are better finished have up to date plumbing and electrics, are well maintained and fully furnished to a higher standard.
The shabby Thai bungalow is Bt7k and the Indonesian apartments, while not quite so spacious are around Bt10K.
Cost of living, wines and spirits are more expensive in Indonesia, while most food stuffs are slightly cheaper there, and smokes are half price.
Utilities are comparable. Internet, TV, Electric water etc
Pork and ham can be had but at a premium. Imported Aussie beef is good value.
Local bottled beer, like Bintang is about the same in bars in both places.
No idea about pussy comparisons but I assume they are available in Indonesia if that's your thing?
The major difference for me was the people. We all get sucked in by the LOS thing when we land here, only to appreciate it has a dark side after a while. Good and bad everywhere I know, but the Indo folk do seem much more genuine, even the Muslims.
After a month in Bali, I'm off to do an Attenborough and spend time in Sumatran countryside before making a final decision.
This will be my third trip in less than a year so no snap judgements. Might even pick up some consultancy work. Most long term rentals are on a 12/24 month advance basis. I will pay the premium for monthly flexibility, so if it all goes to ratshit, I can up sticks and head somewhere else.
Still in transit.
Heart of Gold and a Knob of butter.
TBH, I've lived in worse places - although it was when I was a bit younger than you.
It's just curious to me as to how much teachers are putting away and at what years (stages) in their lives along with the compromises made.
For what it's worth, (I can't post pics now as we're between travel plans & the house is a wreck) my Saudi gaff is 3 b/r, 2.5 bath w/ large kitchen, dining room, living room, washer/dryer + garden + yard and from the outside it resembles S Florida track housing.
Comes with all utilities, satt TV, internet. I can save about 3 x what you are but, hey - look where I am.
For most people (including the majority of my colleagues) it's a huge compromise to just be here. Although for me, I quite like it most of the time.
I was white knighting for Mandaloopy, but he doesn't seem to care, so I'm not sure why I bothered in the first place!
Are you sorry, loopy, that you picked Mandalay over Europe? That was my question on the earlier page, that you missed. Anyway, that savings is pretty good.
I'm saving about the same, but I'm also spending quite a bit.
The rents are crazy high here, but my school gives me 1400.00$ that covers my rent.
It was a nightmare trying to find an apartment because many that are in that rent range are hard to find especially closer to downtown. I settled to be closer to my school, but quite away from downtown. I do like it here though as there is everything I need.
I have a 1 bedroom, small, yet comfortable apartment. It is really all I need because I was living in this sized apartment for a number of years and it is what I'm used to.
I do have pics, but a bit afraid to show them based on this crowd. lol.
If you are interested in China, let me know and I can help you out. I have given you so much information previously on China, but you decided to go where you are.
Check my thread on Bali, thanks.Originally Posted by chassamui

I'd love to hook up for a beer if you are in the area.. missed you in T-land!
^^ It seems to have a full set of wheels, and at least one door, which is about as far as my appreciation/knowledge of cars goes, I'm afraid - I'm about the worst person on the planet to direct a post like that at.
Well spotted girl. Im here until next weekend then Im off to South Sumatra for a few weeks. Back in Bali end of September apartment hunting. I'm just here to pack my stuff and hand back the bungalow and bike rental. Wash and go as it were.Originally Posted by bnice2me

Appreciated! With Brexit I may well have dodged a bullet to answer the second question.Originally Posted by bnice2me
Took a walk around the local neighborhood and snapped some pics.
Mandalay has a limited nightlife- beer stations such as this are the mainstay. The beer is pretty decent and cheap.
There are pagodas and monasteries all over town, this is my local one.
I live on in a high-rise- dread to think about this place going up in smoke.
Just a typical street, nothing special
Not really a street food scene, this tea shop does good breakfast foods and passable fried rice and noodles.
The local fruit and vegetable market- not going to win any awards for hygiene but the quality is really decent
That's not my car, and the one I pictured (and deleted for this very reason) makes 743 wheel hp on nitrous.Originally Posted by bsnub

Toys.
And I don't like the convertible. Or the GT. LX coupe is my model of choice so if you're gonna troll get it right.
^^ Looks like a shabbier version of Thailand, which isn't a good thing. Or have you just taken some unflattering photos?

I was going to ride out on my motorbike and snap some photos. But I got pulled over by the police again when riding this morning - the reason is that they have never seen a foreigner! Had to call a local teacher to sort it out.
Unlike police in Thailand, they are not after $$$; they simply cannot grasp that a foreigner lives in Napyidaw AND is allowed to freely ride around on a motorbike LoL.
I agree with Mandy that the challenge of living in Myanmar is more mental than physical. Sure, if you can't stand living in a shithole, then the physical environment will get to you. But the mental challenge of the lack of decent company (meaning expats who aren't pissed or drugged up all the time, or - for me - friendly local women), gets to you. Plus the challenges of unreliable international internet, unreliable electricity supply, even unreliable availability of food in the supermarkets (currently, no CP chicken, no muesli and no soy milk in Napyidaw).
So many isn't the only one considering his options. As I've mentioned a million times before on this forum, one major reason for me to stay in Myanmar is the issue of my radio ham licence... and that ain't happening.
OTOH, one can save good money in Myanmar. I'm much older than Mandy (58), and if I return to Europe, I'll be very hard-pushed to get a decent job, and the cost of living/tax will surely mean that I can save only a small amount of my salary.
