    Thais picking fruit in Australia?

Sister in laws latest idea for work is via an agent who gets work for Thais in Australia picking fruit for 2 years. Somebody she knows has done it so likely not a fee rip off. Don't know where but can this be legal? she thinks she will be getting work permit Her last brainstorm was a coffee shop opposite another coffee shop, lasted less than 6 months.

Couldn't say but wifey's father, step brother and others have pulled off similar in Norway and Madagascar.
Braved some hellish times (cold / outdoorsy) to get paid pretty handsomely.

I wouldn't trust a Thai to pick their nose and get it right.

I am not aware of any Australian work permit for picking fruit in Australia.

A visitor visa allowing a two year stay can be granted with certain conditions. To allow a tourist (generally young) to extend their stay. Eg can only work for one year to support themselves, have to work 50% of the time in regional areas.
The persons being granted these visas, are often not paid the correct rates, they find it hard to complain as loss of the employment would invalidate their visa.

This visa is for persons under 31yo and year two is only granted after satisfying the conditions of year 1.

However before I ramble on anymore about this visa - Thailand is not an eligible country to apply.

10 years ago, some flipper friends paid 3k$ to work as fruit pickers in Australia. It turned out to be a scam.

Perfectly legal. Have a read of this. https://jobsearch.gov.au/documents/h...2020150225.pdf

It's an Oz govt guide to seasonal harvest work in Australia.

The visa required is a Working Holiday Visa. http://www.border.gov.au/Forms/Documents/1263.pdf

Fruit picking is very hard work, long hours and poor pay.

I really doubt a Thai would stick it out.

Rooted a Thai gal in Israel around 2004-ish who was doing it. The first year's salary was taken to pay for the flights and visas, then 2 years of full salary. So she said.

She was Thai though, so was probably lying about something or other.

As per usual Bob, you have googled and got it wrong.

Working holiday visas are not available to Thai Citizens.

The form 1263 you erroneously gave the link for, is the application form for a person applying for the second year, not an application for the initial visa.

Not strictly accurate it seems, but the demands seem somewhat onerous.

For as start you have to have AUD5,000 to support yourself.

And it mentions "Except for US and Chinese nationals, you must have a letter of support from your government".

Countries eligible to apply for a Working Holiday Visa to Australia are:
Online applications: United States of America
Paper based applications: Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay

Years salary taken for flights and visa's sounds like a real winner then

    ffs

Any Thai that got their degree and got on the ladder instead of picking their nose and playing Fate and Line 18 hrs a day would be on that by their mid 30's.

The scammers really do go after the lazy, greedy, simpletons.

    No offence.

Supposing the visa issue could be sorted (or worked around), 90k baht a month sounds about right for that kind of back-breaking labor, although each picker's harvested amount should (theoretically) play into their final take.

Know some Thais in Korea working the "dirty Ds" earning that (and some a bit higher) right now, but they've put in a few years to get to that amount.

There is a part on the Embassy site where you put yer details in and it comes up with 3 types of visa. First two no chance but the last one, subclass 408, has domestic work, so I reckon they maybe getting them in on that but them doing other work. It's mostly skilled with not a mention of agricultural work

It can be achieved for a wage in Korea of 70k a month they have to shack up in tiny apartments working 18 hours p/d share food, no control of passport, abused, 4-6 months until full pay is received after extra agent fees, flights etc paid. many over stay after visa runs out to try and make money saving face.
Most end up blacklisted and deported.
    Some get lucky.

O and yes arranging fee has to be paid before leaving.
