I wasn't advocating ignorance, per se, I was merely referencing the probability that ignorance of a detailed Thai history is no bar to comprehension of their current iteration, or indeed what passes for their society and its culture, or lack thereof.

In truth, that pretty much applies to most of SE Asia.

That's the beauty and appeal of ignorance; like stupidity, it's self-concealing. It's the easiest thing in the world for a fool or an idiot to convince himself of his wisdom and insight.

Given that the wisest and most knowledgeable of folk will make theoretical assumptions inspired by vanity and over-arching ego that subsequently prove to be wrong because of some ignorance or other, that's a pretty vacuous pronouncement. Everyone on the planet will draw their imaginary line in the sand marking there sense of self worth, that's just fucking human nature. Spouting banalities as if they were the greatest of profundities is a bore.

What you really meant to say is that most folk are too fucking stupid and ignorant to know just how fucking stupid and ignorant they truly are.

Not really. Generally, as you move up the scale of knowledge and ability, self-assessment goes down (relatively); stupid and ignorant people over-estimate their abilities and the clever and well-informed underestimate theirs. There's solid experimental evidence for this so it's not something which is really open to debate (though of course being ignorant of these things would generate the illusion of having knowledge of the subject and open up the possibility of doing just that).

What you really meant to say is that most folk are too fucking stupid and ignorant to know just how fucking stupid and ignorant they truly are.
Not exactly. I'm saying that people's ignorance (yours of the country you appear to have spent a fairly long period of time in, for example) allows them to generate explanatory narratives which appear from the inside to be entirely satisfactory but which from the outside are obviously absurd. If you're happy to be in that situation then good for you.

I agree. Why I decided to build and live there. This time of year is stunning. Especially when the rice fields along the long empty roads are so vibrant green along with the clouds along the mountains.

I also found Tibet to be stunning as well, sadly was only there for a week. Need a month to hang and take it all in. Imagine it is similar to Nepal and Bhutan. Never been there however. Would love to go spend a month

PT, clearly, you have not heard a judgement from the Common Serjeant at the Old Bailey in the 1980s. You told him he was talking through his arse and he'd cut your bollocks off yet he was regularly overturned at the CA.

As Solomon said....vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

Incidentally, my knowledge of the region is extensive.

^ One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

An uncannily accurate description of life on the internet.

A first for me being a west Aussie.. always tried to avoid cold places. Fookin hate the cold. There shouldn't be any excuse for getting a hot beer eh?
