I think you are being somewhat hypocritical here. Linux for beginners would simply download Ubuntu and use that. What's the difference between doing that and buying a MacBook with everything already sorted and is contained within a slinky aluminium package which nestles nicely on one's chest and takes on the chill of the aircon as it prickles one's nipples.

Surely, looking cool and having a cool product with a superior social cool cachet is worth the money?

Seeing how Linux distros are free the difference would about 36,000 baht apparently, plus not being bound to Apple products. Pretty simple decision really.

Ive never felt bound to apple at all. Cant really think of anything a Mac can't do that a PC can.

The ONLY thing that I've ever needed for my macs that I felt was necessary was:

    https://www.paragon-software.com/ufsdhome/ntfs-mac/

And only because I share/borrow drives from people on the reg while offshore for movies & series.

I use Mint for most stuff and Office Libre suits me fine. Full Windows 7 set up on costs me less then 50 bucks. No need for all the latest software.

I did admittantly get a very good deal on it at $129 (it was a Black Friday thing at Fry's Electronics). It was new though, not a refurb, and I buy them rarely enough where shopping these deals is a realistic comparison for how much the next one might run me (since I'm obviously not committed to ASUS and Windows PC's are a dime a dozen to shop around for)

In two years, I have spent an additional $40 on it. $20 on a new battery, and a little less than $20 on a new charger that both either broke or wore out. Was hard to tell which...

Intel Celeron N2830 Dual Core Processor (1M Cache, up to 2.41 GHz)
    4GB DDR3L-1333 RAM, 500GB 5,400RPM Hard Drive
    15.6" 16:9 HD (1366x768) display
1 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0, Integrated SD card reader, No Optical Drive
Weights 4.74 lbs, up to 4 Hours battery life

Of course it was cheap. It has the computing power of 10 years ago ffs.

Anyway up to the end user whats adequate I guess but dayum I run 3 monitors and several apps/downloads at once from my MacBook Pro when home flawlessly using this:

    https://hengedocks.com/pages/horizon...cbook-pro-2016

At home its a desktop and then when I fly out unclip it from the dock and slip it in my bag.

No way that computer would handle even 50% of what I ask of it.

What do you do? I mean, besides gaming or advance computation the difference in these PC's is just totally negligable (practically speaking I mean, not technically).

The average user is not gonna see anything other than marginal differences. Obviously I'm not gaming on a cheap ASUS laptop that cost a hundered bucks. I download shit and surf the internet

If you do something worth it, then yeah pay it. Most people its just money down the shitter.

I think the last PC laptop I had that had 4GB Ram & 500GB HDD was like 10 years ago (or something) when call of duty came out and it was top of the line at the time, and even then you had to be careful because it could get sluggish/crash/Ctrl-Alt-Delete if you asked to much of it.

I guess unless you just use the googler and torrent etc its probably fine but lawd have mercy if you try and open several programs at once.

I mean phones & tablets are almost on par with your current PC.

But if you are satisfied with your laptop then I guess thats what matters.

Top of the line being the key. This wasn't an average PC ten years ago, so that's kind of a bit of an exaggeration to say its antiquated like that. Its a serviceable, basic, nongaming, totally functional PC by today's standards.

    It does that fine. Honestly

Not for $129. Specs are all about prices. You're comparing apples to oranges. You get what you pay for, I didn't pay top of the line prices.

That said, is an apple laptop that costs north of 1K worth the costs, given its specs? In my opinion, no. You're paying a premium for branding on what is basically a disposable commodity.

Nah. Thats like saying you have a car, and I have a different car, but your car is more expensive therefore ripoff because all cars of the same size are identical except for the badge.

Well if the function is the same, but you could get it cheaper with the same or very similar function then to me that would qualify as paying for branding.

Toyota versus Lexus would be a classic example of paying for branding.

Another example: I owned an iphone that didn't do anything an LG phone I owned at a fifth its price didn't do just as well or virtually just as well. That's paying for branding (thank god my work payed for that phone, not impressive relative to cost)

Well, if you can live without nipple-cooling laptops, it's a fraction of the cost to use Linux - the software is free and the hardware is vastly cheaper. And it's obviously a lot cooler to talk about your latest Arch build than how you've just shoved another couple of thousand dollars into Apple's already huge and bulging coffers.

Bit pricey to get the machine to install those $19 apps on though.
