Elon Musk on NGA 2017, the Governors meeting

A questions and answers session with questions mostly from governors and a few from the audience. It is covering a lot of issues. I strongly recommend watching it. It should be interesting to anybody.

    Elon Musk beginning at 26:30.

10 years from now basically all new cars will be autonomous. No more steering wheel.

AI is the biggest existential threat to our society. It needs understanding and regulation.

Switch to all renewable energy is unavoidable, it will happen. Happening sooner is better.

Let's hope that Musky sets about solving that particular problem.

    I am not convinced.

On upper class cars you will probably be able to have one as an option, don't worry.

He usually is a bit optimistic on timelines, but in the end he is right. He plans a car to drive through the whole continental US completely autonomous as long as it is mainly highways by the end of this year. City traffic is more challenging.

That's great, and sure many people would want it.

But how many people enjoy driving, and buy their cars based on the pleasure and enjoyment of driving them.

It just isn't going to happen on a massive scale.

Most people can not afford to self drive any more. It will come with a heavy insurance premium.

For me personally and my wife it might come just in time. There may be legislation that people that age have to pass health tests or just lose their license. Lots of talk about it as some old people are a road hazard. 10 years from now I may be in that category.

And not just AI as a sentient concept but the algorithms that we increasingly depend on and which increasingly dictate our choices, the data that we freely submit and those that control it. Culture is becoming increasingly non-humanist where existence is determined by functionality rather than emotional creativity.

Best book I've read for a long time and a disturbingly credible prediction of the future of mankind...

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

In ten years..? Unlikely.. but in 20-30 years.. in advanced societies? Quite possible.

I actually too doubt the all cars part. But it will be widely available. Tesla makes advances every few months. Others are not far behind, I am sure. I have heard that Google even has the most advanced system but did not market it well.

Google made a sudden very dramatic leap forward with their machine translation last year - they made more progress in a couple of months than they had in a decade. These things happen. What seems impossible for ages suddenly becomes reality and after nothing changing, everything does.

On the other hand, fission has been 20 years away for the last 60 years, so it's not always the case.

People will always want their tyre pressure checked and the dead bugs squeegeed off their windscreens..

Saw my first Tesla 3 driving down the road a couple of days ago. But this is Dubai. They've ordered 200 of them I think to be taxis.. we're a long way off autonomous driving here, maybe for the Indians but the Arabs wouldn't give up their 4x4 weapons without much rattling of sabres.

The electric and water authority DEWA have just introduced their AI assistant that can speak both English and Arabic to help you with all your enquiries... this is the same government agency whose online payment site crashes for the first few days of each month and whose offices only accept cash.., you can see how that's going to work out. 😊

This is the real power... with all the info Google have and their research into increasingly sophisticated algorithm construction. Already they can tailor advertising to suit your tastes, as people start to rely on Google's algorithms to make lifestyle decisions for them it will be those that control the direction of the available choices that will become most powerful.
