    It's OK....dark chocolate is good for you.

    I buy 85% dark, which is quite bitter and is not moreish like the sugar-filled milk chocs. Some brands are better than other. Forget Cadbury....it tastes like mud.

    Frey (from Woolworths) is ok, but I favour Lindt and Moser Roth (bought from Aldi).

    Disagree. You're correct in the first part though.

    It's not a precise science - calorie intake that it, as opposed to calories in food. For example I think that depending on where you are and the regulations in place the stated amount of calories in a food by the manufacturer can vary by as much as 20%. Then you've got variations between foods, brands and manufacturer to consider and, as you state, not every single calorie taken in is being absorbed into the body anyways. However in terms of tracking it's just about maintaining a ballpark number not down to the precise figures.

    Just by way of example: I know exactly what will happen to my body if I track my calories / macros and take in 2,000 per day regardless of whether all / some of those are being used. And the only way to do that is by tracking intake.

    As it happens I've just started a bit of a mini cut @2,000 cals per day. Some days are slightly less, some slightly more but as long as it averages out it's OK in the end and even if my body is actually only using, say, 1,500 of those calories that will still be consistent by tracking.

    Think about that.
    So what happens to your body happens if those calories consumed are used or not used. That implies that what happens to your body happens for reasons other than calorie intake.
    I suspect an error in the way you explained it, but that's what you're saying above.

    If you eat high calorie, high fibre food, you're more likely to excrete more calories than if you eat high calorie, low fibre food.

    What I'm suggesting is that you can enjoy your dinner, eat what you want, but make sure there was lots of dietary fibre in the meal too.

    Anorexics have a variation on this idea; Eat then take a laxative.



    Oh, and the chap that said if you eat fat you will gain fat....rubbish. Mainly due to the fact that fat is a laxative.
    I only buy fat meat. I disdain the lean stuff (unless it's beef fillet ).

    So what is the idea level body fat anyway? Apparently I'm around 14% at a rather wimpy 68 kilos lol. "Bulking" is not all that easy here in Mandalay- eat big then get awful sick from the food. My only real complaint about Myanmar would be the food, never had any issues like this in Thailand.

    Mandaloopy, you saw me last week in Mandalay. I'm about 11-12% body fat and 62 Kg. I measure my body fat using body calipers and comparison with photos of men with different % fat levels.

    My six pack is quite visible now, (even though I'm 58 years old). There is only a thin layer of fat over my middle abs.

    One issue about losing fat is that losing fat from the abs is the last place to go. For some, if you get your % fat down to a level to show your abs, then maybe your ribs also show! It's all down to genetics.

    For me, my bones don't stick out, but I'm sure that they would if I dropped to say 9% fat.

    Anyway, I lost weight just for health reasons. The chances of finding a cute female in Naypyidaw who appreciates my body and is a nymphomaniac are fairly low....

    The study shows that in the research population, the greatest health benefits appear to come from running "five to 19 miles per week at a pace of six to seven miles per hour, spread throughout three or four sessions per week". That's not even close to being the same thing as "Humans haven't evolved to be able to run for an hour".

    I researched about long distance running before I started my exercise programme in February. My Googling suggested that running 10 Km was absolutely fine, but running marathon distances on a weekly or more regular basis could lead to heart scarring.

    So I chose 10 Km...

    A full hour of hard fitness training was more likely to leave those taking part feeling burned out.
    Possibly true, but in my own case, running 10 Km is not leaving me breathless or my heart racing.

    Right now, I'm running 10 Km in about 50 minutes, at 12 kph. My HR reaches about 170 bpm (my body max HR is around 195). When I complete my run, my HR recovers rapidly, I'm not out of breath, my legs don't hurt and I'm back to 'normal' in a few minutes.

    I have improved my fitness and stamina by very slowly increasing my pace over months.

    Believe me, if I felt knackered after a run, I wouldn't do it!

    You are on the money there simon.

    Exercise is generally for endorphin kick and cardio/fitness benefits.

    Weight loss is all about diet.



    The only exception being endurance exercise over an extended period.

    If you cycle 40 miles a day carrying tents and camping gear for 2 months then you will not be able to keep weight on no matter how much you eat. That was my experience anyway.

    There's nothing healthy about getting your heart up to 170bpm at age 58. It means it's working like fuck just to keep you sustaining a fairly low speed run.
    It isn't working like fcuk at all. At 170 bpm, I am neither out of breath and nor are my legs exhausted after running 10 Km.

    When I did the exercise stress test in the hospital, that's when they really pushed me to exhaustion!

    My HR increases very slowly over the 10 Km distance and then falls very rapidly after I stop running. That is the important part ==> that my HR rapidly decreases.

    I trust my own body and I trust my doctors more than the Luddite crap that you're spouting.

    Update:
    Right now, I can run 10 Km in 50 minutes. If I now try to run the same distance in 45 minutes, then I would be exhausted and totally fcuked.

    But if I slowly decrease my race time by maybe 30 seconds every week, then I will be slowly building up my stamina. I expect that I can run 10 Km in 45 minutes by maybe next year.

    It is simply a question of understanding the limits of your body and not pushing yourself too hard. At some point, I will hit a limit that I can't overcome for my age/body etc.

    Absolutely correct. In February, I was unfit, ate a bad diet and had a beer gut and weighed 73 Kg (which was too much for my 'wiry' body shape).

    So I embarked on a slow but regular fitness regime and much-improved diet. Slowly, the fat dropped off, slowly my puny muscles got a little bigger, slowly I was able to jog a little and then more.

    Prior to all this, I had an extensive health and heart check, and all was good for me to go on this regime.

    Yes, I have surprised myself! I never even considered that I could run 10 Km in 50 minutes. But I'm doing that now and not getting tired doing so.

    Yes, I never thought that I would have a six pack. But I have and I can post up a recent photo of my sexy body if you really want to see it.

    I haven't contradicted myself at all. If I were a lifelong athlete, then at 58 years old, I'd be running 10 Km in 35 minutes, (which is what some guy in the north of the UK does at my age).
