    Thailand: The Land of Inconsistencies

Thailand is the land of... If you're going with the old cliché, you may insert smiles (which, still has many different connotations). However, I personally believe that we should start calling Thailand "The Land of Inconsistencies", since there are so many examples of people receiving different forms of treatment in similar situations. And I thought we were all equal. Here are some examples for your entertainment.

    1. Being absent from work like 90% of the time is alright so long as you're the little brother of the junta head. If you're a normal civilian, you'll be sacked after If you're a normal civilian, you'll be sacked after three days of not showing up for work without good reason.

    2. You go about your normal life, doing normal things like eating at a roadside vendor. No one gives a damn unless you post pictures of the food on your IG and get like twenty likes, at best. However, if you're a celeb who eats street food, it'll be reported as "news" by some online media outlets to show how humble these people can be. You know they were civilians before they became celebrities right?

Also, no one cares about what you look like now and what you looked like five years ago. However, again, if you're a celeb, your then and now pictures are considered newsworthy by some online media outlets. The fact that they feel the need to show the public that "Hey, people look different when they get older" seems a bit like a poor and lazy excuse for journalism, don't you think?

    3. If you're accused of a murder but you look pretty, you may gain a level of fame (or infamy in this case). Some "fans" may post comments online to show their support. Some may try to capitalise on your situation by offering to sell things that you've been photographed using.
If you're an ordinary looking person who's accused of the same crime, there's a chance you'll be physically assaulted by angry onlookers during a crime re-enactment. And some will think you deserve it too.

    4. If you're an heir to a big business empire who's wanted for a hit-and-run which resulted in one death, the Thai justice system may be extra lenient on you. No arrest will be made and you can even deny reporting to the police when you were ordered to many times. Things will probably get dragged on indefinitely. Heck, you may even be allowed to bail completely and go travel abroad. #luckyyou.

    5. PM Prayut Chan-o-cha reprimanded Lumyai Hai-thongkhum ("Longan Golden Jar" in English), a female luk thung singer, who danced provocatively in a video that went viral online earlier this week. Well, have you seen pictures and videos of the "pretty" dancers who were hired to perform at parties organised by the soldiers? They are out there on the internet but some are NSFW. Well, I guess Uncle Tu's subordinates don't share his sentiments.

    6. Thais speaking English but not with a perfect accent will be met with smirks and sneers from some Thai experts of the English language. Thais speaking perfect English will be met with an "oh, you think you're too cool for the Thai language, do you?" or a "you're so pretentious" kind of reaction from some fellow Thais. Farangs speaking Thai -- no matter how good or bad their accents are -- will generally be showered with praises from Thais.

Leave then be. They are trying to grow out of it. If it's not your cup of tea, try Cambo or N Korea.

Our ancestors were less than perfect, and have found new ways to be stupid as long ago as, just yesterday.

Yes, one of several aspects of 'Thainess' that cripple progress in the classroom. Any students able to express themselves are either met with sarcastic 'ooooh! poot geng!' praise, or simply marked as people 'outside the gang'. And I'm talking about even middle-aged professionals here.

So glad I don't have to put up with it anymore.

The Thais and Thailand are well fuked, gota wonder how they got this far.

Smoking hot, ball stiffening Bints is the correct answer.

I love Em, hot as fuk.

    Soi 4 is Gods country.

    Thanks, Ta.

Yes that was disgraceful, utterly disgraceful...

And where, precisely, on the internet are they? I feel the need to feel disgraced again.

In all seriousness though, don't all those things you posted - specifics aside and with the possible exception of #6 - apply to practically any/every country?

^ Quite possibly...and, as Chas suggests, some progress has been made. It doesn't seem to me to be a country that 'mentally locks out' the rest of the world as much as it did 25 years ago, for example.

The 'powers that be' seem to be doing their best to reverse that trend, mind.

Can't disagree with that. Nothing's more of a handbrake on development than a bunch of old men who hold 'moral authority'.

I am sure that we are all glad that you have left the classroom. Are you seeking remunerative employment now or receiving benefits ?

Yes I don't tend to post my opinion much. Just add photos and videos to a thread. OK, my opinion on this article.

The biggest difference in Thailand for me is anger management. I am constantly wound up by Thais who want me to get angry and lose face. But when I wind the Thais up they go on defence and claim your picking on them.

What I want is for Thais who wish foreigners residing in Los to behave like Thais should forget it and stop winding us up. You're playing a dangerous game. One day the foreigner will bite and you wished you left him or her alone.

There goes the 'dispassionate observer' ruse.

In reality, another 'Mr. Angry' type.

In fairness Wilson, you're taking the right approach-there are no vacancies for those positions.

The only difference I have seen here in over 30 years is that laws are now being implemented such as drink driving which in my opinion is a good thing.

We also have not had politically driven bloodshed in the streets for quite some time which also I am very happy about. Stability is a good thing for most societies.

Whether you like the present junta government or not things are steady and mostly relaxed among the masses.

    I doubt that very much.

Perhaps it's to do with the area in which you live and the people you live with, or perhaps it's just you.
I honestly can't think of a single instance of that happening to me in the last 11 years.

    Why wind anyone up?

Seems an odd way to structure ones life.

No offense meant it's just my view.

Yes, and judging from other posters with similarly exasperated outlooks it seems the possibility of living in one of the other 194 countries of the world is completely out of the question.

Yup...as expected, latent homophobia is in the mix too.
