Thailand is the land of... If you're going with the old cliché, you may insert smiles (which, still has many different connotations). However, I personally believe that we should start calling Thailand "The Land of Inconsistencies", since there are so many examples of people receiving different forms of treatment in similar situations. And I thought we were all equal. Here are some examples for your entertainment.
1. Being absent from work like 90% of the time is alright so long as you're the little brother of the junta head. If you're a normal civilian, you'll be sacked after If you're a normal civilian, you'll be sacked after three days of not showing up for work without good reason.
2. You go about your normal life, doing normal things like eating at a roadside vendor. No one gives a damn unless you post pictures of the food on your IG and get like twenty likes, at best. However, if you're a celeb who eats street food, it'll be reported as "news" by some online media outlets to show how humble these people can be. You know they were civilians before they became celebrities right?
Also, no one cares about what you look like now and what you looked like five years ago. However, again, if you're a celeb, your then and now pictures are considered newsworthy by some online media outlets. The fact that they feel the need to show the public that "Hey, people look different when they get older" seems a bit like a poor and lazy excuse for journalism, don't you think?
3. If you're accused of a murder but you look pretty, you may gain a level of fame (or infamy in this case). Some "fans" may post comments online to show their support. Some may try to capitalise on your situation by offering to sell things that you've been photographed using.
If you're an ordinary looking person who's accused of the same crime, there's a chance you'll be physically assaulted by angry onlookers during a crime re-enactment. And some will think you deserve it too.
4. If you're an heir to a big business empire who's wanted for a hit-and-run which resulted in one death, the Thai justice system may be extra lenient on you. No arrest will be made and you can even deny reporting to the police when you were ordered to many times. Things will probably get dragged on indefinitely. Heck, you may even be allowed to bail completely and go travel abroad. #luckyyou.
5. PM Prayut Chan-o-cha reprimanded Lumyai Hai-thongkhum ("Longan Golden Jar" in English), a female luk thung singer, who danced provocatively in a video that went viral online earlier this week. Well, have you seen pictures and videos of the "pretty" dancers who were hired to perform at parties organised by the soldiers? They are out there on the internet but some are NSFW. Well, I guess Uncle Tu's subordinates don't share his sentiments.
6. Thais speaking English but not with a perfect accent will be met with smirks and sneers from some Thai experts of the English language. Thais speaking perfect English will be met with an "oh, you think you're too cool for the Thai language, do you?" or a "you're so pretentious" kind of reaction from some fellow Thais. Farangs speaking Thai -- no matter how good or bad their accents are -- will generally be showered with praises from Thais.
