Numerous surveys show the Philippines has the highest usage of social media sites in the world.

We have (had) two young maids. Glued to their fucking phones 24/7. Wife finally got fed up. Told them no phones during the day other than a hour after lunch....just like a real job.

Both quit - instantly.

Unreal. No education, no skills, no job prospects, no money - but they do have that fucking phone.

It's because Filipino women are so social and gregarious. Twenty years ago I heard that they spent more time on the phone than women in any other country.

When I was there I was targeted by a few wanting to get to know me, and they knew exactly how to string out a conversation, even by SMS.

My current internet provider uses Filipino call centres and they're very friendly, but it's hard to get em to shut up sometimes.

The waitstaff at the resorts restaurants I've stayed at have had the same affliction. A couple have posted something, and while I'm in the restaurant eating and surfing the net they've posted a selfie, I've commented on the pic, and got a reply quicker than I got my next beer.

That said, Filipinas are lovely lasses, and I would like to set up shop with one when I move to the Philippines.

Side note: every dog and his/her neighbour is a phone addict these days. Quite distressing.

Seriously? Well, you're obviously better off without those two with an attitude like that. It's hard to fathom how someone with no job prospects would choose social media over pesos in the pocket.

I'd read (on here, I think) that Thais have the highest use of FB per capita in the world.

If you live in PI, the unit of phone you use and the # of hours you waste using it is a big indicator of one's social status.

Pathetic, but true.

E.g. Loads of maids live in FB and have hundreds of texts m8s (Textmates). They love to forward crazy chain txts.

The Hi-so barely use text and mostly call / use the net.

At the end of the day, Flippers are easygoing people and love to enjoy life. For some reason, mobile phones captured the interests, souls and hearts of millions of Flippers. With all the shitty things that's happening in PI, who can blame the masses for clinging on to their beloved cellphones for a bit of fun and salvation?

Clearly big brother won't need screens on a wall, so Orwell got that wrong.

As a problem in the classroom it has worsened x10 over the last 5 years where I am. And around the campus it's like they are hypnotised, when just a few years ago the atmosphere was chatty and friendly.

Quite probably, the one and only benefit to teaching military cadets. They cannot have a phone. (Only caught/found one in three years)

That said, I used to teach in the private sector (Saudi) and the phone use was incredible. Some guys had 3 different phones (all connected). One for family, one for friends and one for love interests.

Eventually, this addiction will kill off any physical interaction with others. If you relate to others via social media, you have no need to compromise.

Line is the reason I bought a smartphone, Davis. My phone bill has come down drastically.

The other week, I went to have a Thai massage. While face down, I noticed the young woman using only one hand and and sometimes stop completely for a few seconds. When I looked around, she was playing with her phone. The shop owner could see very well what she was doing and said nothing, so I told her to put her phone down. I'm not going to that shop any more.

@davis - Line is a smartphone app, which you can use to text, call and send stupid emojis with. You need wifi or data/net to use it. It's not commonly used in PI. Ppl here use viber, whatsapp or skype. Or FB messenger. (So ppl, don't ask me for my Line ID, bcos I don't use it!) 555

Davis, your dumb phone would be considered Jurassic by today's standards. But hey, I have a Nokia dumbphone too. Great battery life. I have 2 phones, a smart one and a dumb one. So I can choose to be smart or dumb. Heh...

What GF said above is true - the make & brand of phone here denotes status. So since I have an old, low-tech 4 y.o. smartphone, I don't have social status as well. When I ride the jeepney, I often see students and factory workers (who are in uniform) who have nicer phones than mine. Oh well...

But then, phone addiction is everywhere. In every country I've been to recently, ppl are glued to their phones like zombies. They don't talk anymore, esp while waiting for the bus or MRT. Sad society...

I've a colleague who has teenage kids. She said that if she talks / orders the kid to do chores, the kid doesn't respond. The kid is upstairs, mom is downstairs. She then messages the kid on FB, few minutes later, the kid is downstairs and will grudgingly do chores. Smartphones - the bane of our existence...
