Some small Thai text across one shoulder and a small ankle tattoo that my friend did for me cos' I wanted to know if they hurt or not. Is it only massive tattoos that get you banned from Onsens in Japan?

Being older I first saw tattoos on friend's fathers arms, mostly military ink from service in WWII. Later in the Navy got to see what the body tattoos looked like on the lifers after a decade or so of liberty calls - not pretty and never wanted to look like that later in my life. Ran into a tiny butterfly on a lover's shoulder in the late seventies which was kind of cool, but most of the next two decades ink was mostly prison or gang-related, but almost always ugly and a sign of an outcast. The current "art" can be beautiful and intriguing but I have never could shake the images of crude ink on old(er) compartment mates as gravity and wrinkles worked their toll.

I had a lot , but over time I have got less in number and more in acreage.
I have been working in Australia in the mining industry for a long time and the prevalence of tattoos' among the blue collar workers has gotten to the stage that you are the odd one out if you do not have them.
personally they don't bother me except for the facial and hand tattoos.
