    Free Uncle Fatty

A wild monkey a few weeks ago:

15 kilo Bangkok macaque called ‘Uncle Fatty’ loves to eat, forced to have health check

One particularly curvy long-tailed macaque, named “Uncle Fatty” by locals, has been living a quiet life near the waterfront in Bangkok — but he’s not beach bod ready.

The monkey is getting attention this week from wildlife officials. He caught their eye after reports of a monkey “being fat” in Bangkok’s Bang Khun Thian neighborhood. Now, he will need to undergo a health check to make sure he is okay.

The wild monkey was easily found by workers for National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation who received the reports about the fat simian. They easily spotted the monkey near a floating market and found it to be “really fat,” reported The Nation.

According to a Facebook page for a group of monkey lovers that want to see the creatures remain free-roaming, Uncle Fatty is an an important member of that monkey troop. As a senior in the group, he helps care for younger monkeys. They also report that “the babies love climbing on him because he always has food hidden under his fat stomach. Uncle Fatty is not ill, he’s just old and doesn’t like to move. Only sometimes people will see him teach younger monkeys how to climb and swim.”

    And now Banged up:

Tourists Helped Fatten Him Up; Now Thai Monkey Is On A Diet

A wild obese macaque named "Uncle Fat," who was rescued from a Bangkok suburb, sits with bananas in a rehabilitation center in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday.

Whether he likes it or not, a morbidly obese wild monkey in Thailand is now swapping an anything-goes diet of junk food and soda for a strict regimen of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.
Dubbed "Uncle Fat" by social media followers who began circulating photos of him last month, it was tourists, apparently finding his folds irresistible, who plied him with sweets.
But the primate's predicament is a good example of why people should not be feeding wild animals. Today he weighs 60 pounds, three times the amount of an average adult, reports the Associated Press and is facing serious health issues.
He is in the care of Supakarn Kaewchot who says all of that fat formed a mass that became a type of benign tumor. "He is now in critical condition where there is a high risk of heart disease and diabetes," she says.
Wildlife official Kacha Phukem captured the macaque on April 27 from a Bangkok suburb and tells the Associated Press, "He was the leader of his pack, and when I tried to go in, I had to fight off a flock of them with sticks."
In addition to providing muscle, the pack would ensure that the leader needn't lift a finger for his meals.
"He had minions and other monkeys bringing food for him," said veterinarian Supakarn.
But the hope is that without all the bad influences, Uncle Fat will soon be returning to fighting weight. He is being fed just 14 ounces of lean protein and produce twice a day.

"Unce Fat" is on a diet. Veterinarian Supakan Kaewchot prepares a healthy meal for the obese macaque at a rehabilitation center Bangkok, Thailand, Friday.

Officials hope to release him within the next few months. But whether Uncle Fat can keep off the weight once he gets back to the wild and back to temptation is another story. Sakchai Lalit/AP

Uncle Fatty is back in the wild – and on a diet

The unusually obese long-tailed macaque – nicknamed “Lung Ou-an” (Uncle Fatty) – is fully recovered from lung inflammation and was released back to its usual haunt in Bangkok’s Bang Khunthien district on Wednesday.

Lung Ou-an also shed some fat -– it now weighs 24 kilograms down from 27 – although it is still overall much bigger than the average macaque, which weighs between 8 and 10 kilograms. Officials from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation captured the macaque near a floating market in April. They decided to give it a check-up as it was always seen eating, and there had been complaints that it had suffered physically from being overfed by visitors. Following four months of treatment for obesity and a lung inflammation, Lung Ou-an now eats yoghurt and long beans. It has now rejoined the 300 other long-tailed macaques that roam the Bang Khunthien attraction
