Solidarity vigil in Derry for Palestinian hunger strikers

Sinn Féin held a solidarity vigil in Derry on Friday afternoon in support of 1,600 Palestinian prisoners who are currently on hunger strike against ‘brutal’ treatment in Israeli jails. The vigil took place at the H Block Monument on Rossville Street and coincided with the 36th anniversary of Bobby Sands’ death on hunger strike. Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney said: “There have been a number of these vigils held across Ireland to send a message of solidarity to all those Palestinians incarcerated in Israeli jails and those who are on hunger strike. “It’s very poignant that they took place on the 36th anniversary of the death of Bobby Sands. “Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has urged the Israeli government to abandon its apartheid policies and enter into a meaningful process of peace talks. It urgently needs to defuse the prison crisis by releasing all of those held under internment orders and implement a prison regime that respects the rights of prisoners.

He has also written to the Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan to communicate to the Israeli government our concern at the ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners.”

Bobby Sands and his mates can be glad that they lived in a civilised country, and where lucky not to be a Palestinian prisoner.

I love snakeeyes' new avatar. The colours look good and go well with the colours below it - the yellow and green of his repo and the small red triangle.

Oh, nice pics, snakey. Thanks for sharing. Who won the football match?

And were there any anti-Palestinian demonstrators around?

No surprise that Sinn Fein are in "solidarity" with the Palestinian prisoners.

"The IRA has received some training and support from the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

In 1977, the Provisionals received a 'sizeable' arms shipment from the PLO, including small arms, rocket launchers and explosives, but this was intercepted at Antwerp after the Israeli intelligence alerted its European counterparts.

According to Dr Mir Ali Montazam, one-time first secretary at the Iranian embassy, Iran played a key part in funding the IRA during the 1980s. Iranian officials deposited £4 million into a secret Jersey bank account, funded by the sale of artwork from the Iranian Embassy in London.

Hadi Ghaffari, the "machinegun mullah", was sent to Belfast and organised the distribution of the money via sympathetic Irish businessmen."

Yes, thankfully, the war is over.

No you didn't. The IRA was infiltrated to the highest level. British Secret Service were using that pedophile Joe Cahill to pass them information. The cowards at the top of the tree realised they were going to jail with the info that Cahill passed and so they sued for peace.
British spies recruited paedo IRA chief: Spooks used pictures of Joe Cahill to 'turn him'

British authorities covered up the child sex abuse and used damning evidence to turn Cahill into one of the British Army's most valuable informants, it has been claimed
Joe Cahill, who helped found the Provisional IRA, was pictured abusing a 14-year-old girl in a car in the 1970s, the sources said.
But instead of being prosecuted, the images were used by military spooks to turn the Republican hero – and close ally of Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams – into one of the British Army’s most valuable informants.

When I first landed at Dublin from Holyhead in '93 when a punt was a punt, I went straight to O'Donoghue's and ordered a pint of the black stuff and asked the barman if he'd take English pounds....his reply was, "We'll take anything you've got."

I shouldn't have said "hate". I was just mildly teasing because I liked the previous one.

Great photos there Snakey ... warmly appreciate the 2 minutes you dedicated from your life to capture them ... and the 2 hours it took to navigate TD's photo upload catastrophe ... but that's another story.

Speaking of other stories, was that vigil being held for the Palestinian hunger striker Marwan Barghouti?

Allegedly breaking his fast (we call it breakfast) sneaking in a wee nibble in the loo (no pun intended)?

The BBC news item is here
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...
