Are concepts like "winter" "violent crime" becoming alien and hard to contemplate?

I moved to Thailand in my early 20s and have lived here almost constantly for the last 13+ years. I can no longer conceive of issues like feeling cold. I have never experienced the crime and antisocial behaviour that is seemingly prevelent in Western countries- my younger brother is a philosophy professor at New Orleans and tells worrying anecdotes about hearing the steady rattle of gunfire being a regular thing at night. He also explains that staying in the vasinity of the NOUs grounds is advisable as the university pays for a supplementary armed police force to protect the students and workers..

I have not gone native...No Thai partner, family or mid life conversion to Buddhism for this cat. Having said that I no longer feel English...Perhaps I shall remain a wandering foreigner for the rest of my days...
They champion falsehood, support the butcher against the victim, the oppressor against the innocent child. May God mete them the punishment they deserve

Those aren't an issue where I live in England, very mundane most of the time which creates a new problem, the petty mindedness of everybody looking for the slightest reason to whing.
Filming the pettiness and then playing it on the Internet is the ultimate goal in their mundane lives.

I know what you mean I was born into an upper middle class family and spent most of my time in the UK at the detached family home or other middle class havens e.g the halls of residence at an old school university. My only interactions with ASBO England was my teenage use of illicit drugs. As you say "poverty porn" youtube documentaries can view subject matter in a jaundiced light

I've developed an ever growing contempt for the Anglo Saxon world. The Chinese had highly advanced societies a 1000 years ago while WASPs were wallowing in their own filth and killing one another due to their adherence to a false, pathological monotheistic religion that spread across the whole of Europe inflicting more pain, ignorance and deprivation on an already bereft continent.

I've no desire to go back to the West, either. After being around the gentle people in Chiang Mai for so long, the way people in the US communicate with each other seems so aggressive. Thais are so much more easy going.

For all the bad news stories out of this country, I could find as much horrendous crime in only my home state in the US every day.

Do I detect an underlying longing for a crisp frosty morning, even just one, or is it just that you've come to realise you never will experience that again and gladly accept it?

The only time I've ever felt unsafe walking around in Thailand at night was from the occassional stray dog.

Considering I've been all over the country, that's pretty incredible. All types of areas within 15 minutes of me within the states where you'd want to keep your wits about you. Some a tad further that you wouldn't want to venture into at all
