    Cockfighting in Thailand

Cockfighters reap Year of Rooster bonus in Thailand

Prized birds faced off in front of thousands of spectators at a stadium near Thailand's capital on Sunday as celebrations for the Year of the Rooster brought a windfall for some.

Although cockfighting is banned in many countries on grounds of animal cruelty, it is a lucrative business in Thailand as well as a popular pastime. Sunday's top bird sold for over $70,000.

"This year is a very good year for us. It's the year of the golden rooster. The value of the roosters has gone up," said Banchej Changyai, 55, who was running the contest south of Bangkok on the second day of celebrations for the Lunar New Year.

Each fight involves two roosters facing off in a pit. They lurch at each, inflicting damage with beaks and wings.

Each round is 22 minutes long, and there can be up to six rounds depending on the roosters' endurance.

"Today, the rooster brought me a lot of money. I love cockfighting, it's a hobby of mine," said Narongsak Sealee, 22, after winning 500,000 baht ($14,170) at the Thedthai cockfighting stadium in Samut Prakan province.

Unlike in many countries, the Thai cocks do not fight to the death. Instead, the first bird to cower away loses.

"This rooster is so good that it gives me, the owner, a great reputation and makes me very happy," said Virat Patcharaphangkorn, after buying the event's prize rooster for 2.5 million baht ($70,840).

Saw a cockfight a few years back up north and the owner was feeding it banana and red bull, still lost and spent the rest of the week nursing its injuries in a bamboo cage shitting itself.

Anyone on here been to a cockfight?

A ROOSTER stabbed a man to death during a cockfight

The bird, which had a knife strapped to its leg, stabbed Jose Luis Ochoa on the calf.

He was declared dead in hospital two hours later.

A post mortem showed Ochoa, 35, was killed by a "sharp force injury" to his leg during the illegal cockfight in Tulare County, California.
    It wasn't me!

Seems to be the primary purpose. Same, same as UFC but different.

There are no blades used in Thai cockfighting. I've been to quite a few but not being a gambler didn't find it very interesting.

What are those things on the spurs in the vid above? Looks like they kept getting tangled. The red rooster looked like he was bleeding heavily.

I have to say watching cockfighting is as entertaining as watching their muay Thai stuff.

Bullfighting is a fine spectacle if watching an animal die is your thing.

Just the popular moronically stupid and cruel spectacle you would expect here. Against the law of course in most civilized countries along with dog fighting and other barbarities. It might be more acceptable if they were fighting Soi dogs to the death, they are pests anyway and there is an endless supply but that would not be 'compassionate' would it!

Come on I can't be the only one who's pitted two animals against each other, when I had a dog I would open the house door so he could chase stray cats from our garden, he never did catch up with any, but he liked the chase.
Once out for a walk he spotted a Feral cat and gave chase, the cat spun around and got stuck into him, I had to rescue My dog, those feral cats are nasty.

    Most, yes.
    Yet, is practiced still.

Depends largely on the particular cockfighting circle - and all vary.

In the PI the birds sometimes live to be stiched up and fight again but mostly theyre dog food, what about the bladless thai birds do they mostly live or fight to the death?

The 'music' played during Muay Thai bouts is especially and unnecessarily cruel, though.

I was watching a few videos on cockfighting on YouTube and some cocks are such brilliant fighters they can kill the opponent under 2 min with spurs.
Quiet a few Farang at these bouts as well.

They should try killing a few farang in "under two minutes with spurs". I would pay to see it and it would be generally beneficial for mankind. They could start with those Irish who can resist the urge to fly unconventionally at Swampy.

I have been to a few held in our Tambon and have a couple of family members that own fighting cocks. They don't have additional weapons our way and don't fight to the death. I have seen a loser look like death cooled down and be nursed back in a week or two.

I came upon the village cock fighting ring quite by accident. I was taking my labrador for a walk around the village, innocently unaware of the 'circle' close to the school. Dog was moving further and further in front, with that childlike check-look before jumping the ring and snatching one. It took a lot of farang diplomacy and several boxes of lao khao to ensure that we both made it home in one piece. Damn lucky he snatched the family fighter...
