    Sleep

Never get more than six hours. Usually more like four, and often restless or interrupted.
Since going back to work full time, little has changed other than tired all the time.
About 10 years ago, I had to have a camera down my throat and after a few minutes struggle, they sedated me. Best kip I've had for ages.
Any one recommend a non addictive medication that I can take at weekends and catch up on lost sleep?

No coffee after 2pm, no food after 6 pm.
About 7 pm make a list of the stuff you will be doing at work the next day. Of course you can also do this before you leave work.
If you job is sedentary go for an evening walk around the neighborhood. If in BKK and using public transport , get off the BTS one stop before your usual one and walk home.
Prepare for bed about 1 hour before you go, by watching something relaxing on TV. (No programs about shooting people and blowing things up)

Try earplugs as you maybe waking up to odd noises during the night. I sleep on my side with a pillow on my head and don't hear much outside. Turn a fan on to provide white noise.

If you already do all these things then yes some "substances" maybe required.

Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

Magnesium 500 mg will greatly improve your sleep quality - and is one of the few minerals most people (80+ %) are deficient in.

"Magnesium activates over 300 enzyme reactions in the body, translating to thousands of biochemical reactions happening on a constant basis daily. Magnesium is crucial to nerve transmission, muscle contraction, blood coagulation, energy production, nutrient metabolism and bone and cell formation".

Take a tablet 1 hour before sleep. Don't use a laptop or anything with a screen. *if you must, then download f.lux which will cut the blue light - which disrupts your internal body clock/sleep rhythm.

    Hope that helps.

*F.lux was recommended by another poster (Nemo?) so credit to him, not me.

If you are in Thailand, ask for some Toradol. You may need to know the pharmacist a bit since it is usually given by prescription. I have sleep issues due to arthritic pain and Toradol is a pain reliever, but I will usually sleep 6 hours strait with minimal turning.

As Dickie says above, ^Magnesium supplements seems to work in getting decent quality sleep.
Non-addictive (afaik) OTC medicine in Thailand "Tiffy" seems to do a job as a tranq.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I'm in the sandpit for a while but the pharmacy system is similar here. Will try magnesium, thanks for the tip.
Always thought tiffy was a cold remedy?

It is, but contains an antihistamine and drowsiness is a side effect. You can also use Benadryl 25-50mg nightly. You can probably find it under its generic name Diphenhydramine. I have seen many doctors write for it in hospitals when they wanted a non-addictive sleep aid. I have used it in the past, but it doesn't work for me near as well as Tramadol.

Joining the gym improved my sleep quality greatly. I still struggles to get to sleep and stay asleep, but it's much better.

I'm a terrible sleeper, always have been, 5 hours in one go is normal, but a power nap in the afternoon recharges the batteries.

A specialist told me more than 40 minutes but no longer than an hour.

Works like a charm, and in fact I can powernap and wake up after about 45 minutes without an alarm clock these days.

Some people(my wife for one) swear Melatonin helps. I've never tried it yet.

^ Never tried (or needed that) but yes, almost forgot, it's the heavyweight of knockout artists... Melatonin is a hormone, that helps to regulate your own sleep patterns.

    Good advice, SK.

    Q. Hey, how do you make a hormone?

    A. Kick her in the kunt.

I was wondering why you had transformed into such a cranky prick. Poor sleep will do that.

Explore the possibility of sleep apnea. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea

However sleep disorders are common in guys after they each 50.

I had the same experience of a great sleep after having a colonoscopy....I don't sleep well during Winter, when the days are short, and it surprised me how well I felt afterwards.

My sympathies, mate. It's a bugger isn't it.

Besides the standard Temazapan (https://www.drugs.com/temazepam.html) which requires a scrip I've found Atarax to be quite good.

It's freely available over the counter and cheap as chips. Well cheaper actually.

It's a tranquillizer with antihistamine and the trick is to take 1 tab along with 1 x 500mg Paracetamol. For some reason the paracetamol makes it work a lot better.

The only problem with it that I've had is that if you take it on say a Saturday night, it won't be very effective on the Sunday night.

So, I tend to put up with the bad nights during the week and then use it on the weekend to try and catch up. It certainly helps.

Incidentally, I was told by an alleged sleep expert in Australia that one of the biggest blocks of a good sleep is worrying about not having a good sleep.

True or not it made a difference to me.

Power naps are certainly very useful along with siestas and the like.

Nowadays, If I wake up after 2-3 hours sleep, which is common, I'll just take it easy and read until I feel like sleeping again.

I wish you luck, mate. It is a bugger of a thing to deal with.

...or just thinking too much [as a metaphor] in general.

More than likely an extended cultural ailment.

Excersise in the morning and a glass of rum and milk with a spliff on the side, just before final teeth clean and bed.
....and is non-addictive except for how well it works.
