As I read some of these posts, I am wondering how many here would cry leniency if it was their property and money that was stolen. Is this kind of leniency carried out when someone is caught stealing this kind of money in your own homeland?

The thing that bothers me more is the general attitude that it is fine to borrow/steal from a westerner since all we seem to be is a source of money. When JJ said that the guy went straight to ATM to pay back the money, I have a strong suspicion that to him this was just a cost of doing business. Like when a Thai girl gets used by Nigerians for smuggling drugs where she gets 20 years and real scumbags just look for another stupid victim.

As for foreigners being treated like a doormat this really has to do more with living in a 3rd world country with its crooked laws than anything else. It's 3rd world - and in a 3rd world foreigners are lower than dirt.

Update:

The wife today check the GP's savings account. It seems the nanny withdrew 60k from his account the day before my wife reported it the theft to the police.

Prior to this new information, the police said she can expect 5-10 years. Seems excessive.

She sounds like my ex, but she only stole from her immediate family, myself included so there were never any charges pressed. I wished she had gotten 5-10.
