The nearest I've got to that is the local Spar, which is manned by a pair of soulless south Asian types who — in their defence — purvey a very reasonable line in cheap Polish piss. But in terms of sitting-there-with-book-and-getting-spannered potential, it's a dud. Mainly, I think, I'm not a particular fan of the Great British public. They annoy me. A fucking lot.

I'm off to Oz on the 20th, for a month. It's gonna be a bit of a culture shock- no ma & pa shops, no morning beer. But the rest, I'm looking forward to.

Tried to get a taxi today with the mrs from Suk soi 7 to Param 2, not far from Bang Bon really, 12 of the fukers would not go even with no meter, er that's against the law of course. Finally decide to get one to Klong Toey market and get the 141 bus, not good either but at least one offers 200 baht for the 60 baht ride. The 14th taxi agrees to go to the market on the meter, took about 20 minutes to get one. Bus not great with suitcases of course.

On the way the clever bugger offers to go all the way for 300 baht, I agree and it's only the 3rd time in 24 years I agree to no meter, I do so cos I know the real price is at least 320 to our house which is further than he thinks Mrs knocks him down to 250 so the daft sod is out of pocket, severs him right. I thought they had 'cracked down' on taxi no going and no meter? Depends where you are of course lower suk central world and Pratunam always seem bad, must give the tourists a good impression.

I always want to call and report them of course but the mrs does not want to make a problem, backward Thailand again.
had the same shit on Wednesday the fookers wanted to haggle for 300 baht for what I know is a 50 or 70 baht ride, just takin the piss really, didn't want to turn on the meter. I was only in bangers for the day and a night and probably used about 10 taxis that day all of them were whiney fookers who just wanted to talk about how little money they made and how Thailand baw Dee now, and how government baw Dee also, yeah well. I'm not about to speak politics with somchai just grinned and nodded, after all I was on my way to a gogo bar.
Yes It gets on my nerves when they start the hard luck story, cannot get a fare back from there, cost so much to rent taxi, did not know it was this far, rot tit the way you want to go etc etc. usually including a long discussion with the mrs about the way to go and if this one is the quickest, repeated for about ten minutes. Nobody forces them to drive a fuking taxi. I often stick my earplugs in an feign a sudden illness.

Yep....just got back after a month away.
You know you're back when one official says only Thai passports in this short line of 6 people, go to that 130 people line of Chinese, and let your Thai wife wait.
You know you're back when you get out the airport door and the taxis don't want to use the meter, and the only one that did said there's a 50 baht commission on top of the fare.
You know you're back when just one car before leaving the airport exit, the road is blocked by 10 cops because the ex-wife of the current king was visiting and the entire route from Hatyai University had to be cleared of all traffic for half an hour before her entourage sped to the airport with 6 cop cars in front and another 6 behind.
You know you're back when your taxi driver is an idiot (too many things to list here, but you can imagine if you imagine everything idiotic Thai drivers do).
You know you're back when you get to your soi and some dickhead bought his daughter a gadget that makes a sound like a cat that had it's tail stepped on uses it on the stereo at full blast every minute or so.
You know you're back when the rat shit at your front door has piled up.
You know you're back when the water tastes like shit.
You know you're back when you're hot.
You know you're back when when you're crabby for all things that make you know you're back.
    Thank goodness for duty-free rum.

The owner is a bit of a collector. Saw this American classic there. Unfortunately its only a shell with suspension and wheels. Not sure of the model maybe a Cadillac? Im sure some Tdorian will know.

This is the hotel we stayed first night. Looks nice but poorly maintained bed sheet looked like it had been there for 6 months bathroom sink broken pigeons roosting in the eaves and pigeon crap on the outside wall, dead pot plants. The reason we moved to the one above same price but chalk and cheese as far as quality goes. Shame has real potential.

Apropos Maanaam's catalogue of gripes, I have to say that when I'm accompanied by the wingman I have never been consigned to wait in the "others" queue at Swampy but have always been accepted in the Thai line. Mind you, I am not presumptuous in any way and appear meek and mild whilst she seeks the immigration officer's permission for me to accompany her.
Also, the taxis at Don Muang and Swampy have always been permitted to charge a premium for pickups there - it's been around the 50 baht mark for years - and I have never had one who declined to put the meter on.

Was wondering about that too because it's never been a plomplem for me either.

On the streets, yes, but the airport's always been fair.

Back in BKK in a couple of weeks for a long weekend. I know I'm back when my appetite returns- not keen on Myanmar food due to the ungodly amount of oil and gristle.

OK. to be fair there is decent local food to be found in Myanmar- Shan Noodles would be my favorite. Green Elephant is a fancy restaurant in Mandalay serving up great local food- it's owned by Than Shwe's family so there is something of a moral dilemma eating there. Tea Shops serve decent breakfast stuff- not healthy but damn tasty!

Took lady cow to Terminal 21 for Valentines day. ( I know all you romantic Tdorians will appreciate this) If your not fat you soon will be after a few of these. Chocolate cake with liquid chocolate and caramel filling with ice cream, cream and banana for good health.

Went for a wander around the outskirts of Mukdahan to the big buddha statue high on a hill overlooking the town and Mehkong river with a view to Laos.

Pity anyone who does this visa run from bangers. I went by train songtaow and mini bus just to get to Mukdahan. This place must be familiar to some.

    Matey,

Ya fly up then catch the Mini bus up to Mukda, bang ya self up at the Brilliant Riverside hotel, walk around the bustling market then get on the piss and have a nice sleep.

    All to easy.

    Top little spot I recon.

My first time Terry. you've obviously got it off pat. Lady Cow doesn't like flying. Still the train was interesting. first time to Ubon. DRC sleeper going up. Pretty well dated and everything rattled. SP coming back very nice and modern but 1st class is connected to the loco so cops all the engine vibration noise etc. Main problem is more stops than the London underground.Stopped about 10 times between the last stop and Hua lamphong. Only 40 minutes late coming back compared to 1 hour late going. Thats probably considered on time for SRT. As per usual on thai trains 2nd class sleeper was so cold people were getting off with jackets and scarfs on.

You know your back in Thailand when: while driving back to our friends house a snake poked its head over the windscreen wipers and came out from somewhere under the bonnet. eventually curled itself around the side mirror before dropping off. Lady Cow and her girlfriend immediately chatted on in Thai about how this must be a lucky sign and they should buy a swag of lotto tickets at their earliest possible convenience. l translated the goings on to the Thai friends husband who launched into a discussion with his teerak about the laws of chance and the non existence of luck. I on the other hand reached into my wallet and asked Lady Cow how many tickets she wanted to buy.
