I agree its reasonable to assume the bloke has some money. But this not the same as being able to afford it. Blowing money not taking into account next month's needs is a common error.

Right there the whole story falls apart. They can - and do - just quit and move on whenever they want to, it's not like they're under contract. The only way this *might* have any traction to it is if she owes someone at the bar 10k.
