Nobody is that much deluded.
Some believe farangs are made to pay too much, which I think is true sometimes.
Also, the wealth/income of the broom is part of the consideration, so I'd expect negotiations for most farangs to start at a higher level than for the taxi-driving neighbour, to pick a low-end example.
Quite simple it's your money and what you do with it is up to you, if you want to help your in laws out, your money your choice, if you don't then don't. Who gives a fuk what anyone else does.
The simple fact is, this is part of Thai culture. Hi-so Thai-Thai Sin Sods can be in multiple millions of baht. More humble Thai-Thai sin sods may be ten thousand baht and a small gold ring. And there is of course everything in between. The sin sods are sometimes kept, very often returned sometimes even plus a considerable amount.
But one point is that the figure is reached through negotiation. 300,000 for a previously married woman with kids is a pretty high - opening bid. As I understand it, there is no hard and fast rule that sin sod is a one time only thing. Again, open for negotiation.
What does strike me as a poor way to start married life is by basically saying to your future in laws, screw you, screw your traditions (and I will screw your daughter ei ei ei). It also strikes me as a poor way of starting married life by saying to your future spouse that their face and standing in the village is worth nothing to you.
Of course all of this is a good way to get a handle on your wife. Is she looking out for your interests - or the families? If she is insisting on a sin sod, insisting on a large figure, and insisting that it is not returned after the ceremony - you may well be advised to take a pass on the whole thing.

50 guests.. Dinner at a very swanky (but also very old) restaurant, professional photographer whole shabam..
Here's the point to all this:- all of her family members, each gave us an envelope with cash. we more than broke even.. in fact, after all expenses were paid (suit hire/wedding dress, everything) we came out ahead by... never mind, point being umm... I forgot... FOJ! heh :bananaman:
