Video-Italian teens arrested, charged with insulting national flag

Italian teens arrested, charged with insulting national flag

KRABI – Two Italian teenagers have been arrested and charged with desecrating Thailand’s national flag after they were caught on video pulling down flags hung from awnings in central Krabi while being drunk.

Officers from Muang Krabi police station, accompanied by immigration and tourist police, arrested on Monday morning the men identified only as Tobias 20, and Ian, 18, according to Thai media.

They were apprehended at a guesthouse on Soi Maharaj 2 in Pak Nam subdistrict, just two sois from where the incident took place.

During the interrogation, the two tourists allegedly admitted to being the men on the videos, saying the incident happened after they left a pub. They were very drunk and could not remember what they had done.

The Italian tourists performed a wai and apologised Krabi residents and the Thai public for what happened.

“We were really very drunk, we like the Thai people and we like the Thai culture,” Tobias told local media.

“We didn’t know about the [flag protection] law. And we just want to say we’re really very sorry.”

Pol Lt Khunsawai Khunno, deputy investigation chief at Muang Krabi police station, said the men were initially charged with colluding to damage other people’s property and desecrating the national flag

The incident occurred in front of shophouses decorated with national flags on Soi Maharaj 4 at 3.30am on Saturday. Ian was filmed pulling on a hanging flag and Tobias ripped down four more flags including the one grabbed by his friend who looked on, laughing. Tobias later pushed two flower pots while walking away.

Under the Thai criminal law, anyone found guilty of desecrating flags or state symbols is subject to a jail term not exceeding two years and a fine up to 4,000 baht or both.

The Thai Flag Act also stipulates penalties — a six-month prison term and a 1,000-baht fine — for such actions.

Two Italians caught in Krabi – Update!

Two Italians caught disrespecting the Thai flag

It didn’t take long, but two Italians that were caught on cctv in Krabi vandalising the Thai National flag have been caught by police.
Well impressively, it took less than 2 days for police to track down the two guys and bring them in for sentencing. No names have been given yet, but we do know that they are Italian Nationals, one aged 20 years old, and the other, 18.

A new video has been released as well as pictures of the two culprits in police custody. They were filmed making an apology in the video it shows them wai before saying, “We are really sorry about that, we didn’t mean it at all. We are from another country. In our country, the flag isn’t so important. We were really, really drunk. We like the Thai people, we like the Thai country, we like everything but we didn’t know about that law. We just want to say that we’re really, really sorry. Khor thot krub.”

^ I'm not a lover of "worshipping" flags, saluting flags or even having laws that say you can "desecrate" a flag, hence my comment only about vandalism. I suspect they will be punished for their crime, as they should be. Probably only a fine.

The wai of the one on the left (darker hair) doesn't look sincere. They prolly both weren't sincere, but the lighter-haired one did a better job of faking it. Heh...

Why should it look sincere? Wai-ing isn't a western thing so to expect him to be wai perfect is really asking too much. I always follow rule one.

Any foreigner getting involved in the wai is clearly a try hard wanker and should be rewarded with a swift kick to the bollocks, preferably mid wai.

Think if the cop told me to wai,I'd do what he told me,just for the sake of possibly not getting a sentence.

Farangs do not initiate a wai.
Thais greet each other with a "wai." Foreigners are not expected to initiate the wai gesture

Do you think the local constabulary in Thailand would be asking for a wai or a donation to the Songkran piss up kitty?

There's nothing to answer because it's a nonsensical argument.

The likelihood of a Thai policeman demanding nothing more than a simple wai in order to grant me my freedom is about as likely as me waking up tomorrow morning next to Liz Hurley while Emily Ratajkowski makes me egg on toast in her Hello Kitty slippers.

Well it makes a lot of sense, because a farang tourist wouldn't have a clue about when and not to why,the coppers have told them to wai and most probably been informed if they co-operate they would'nt get such a harsh penalty.

I bet you would grovel like a bitch.
