There's nothing to answer because it's a nonsensical argument.

The likelihood of a Thai policeman demanding nothing more than a simple wai in order to grant me my freedom is about as likely as me waking up tomorrow morning next to Liz Hurley while Emily Ratajkowski makes me egg on toast in her Hello Kitty slippers.

They were very drunk and could not remember what they had done.
Course they fucking remembered what they did.
They didn't look too drunk in the videos

Hopefully a mob of disgruntled locals will dish out some proper justice.

The one on the left looks like a smug smarmy little c**t

While I don't agree with the vandalism/drunken behavior of the lads...

Seems like a double standard... Thai flag must be respected at all times...

Fook the rest of the flags, lets make them into underwear...

Farangs do not initiate a wai.
Thais greet each other with a "wai." Foreigners are not expected to initiate the wai gesture
"Not expected" and "do not" are two different things. Of course you can initiate a wai. It's appreciated.

Anyway, the guy on the left looks evil.

A wai is initiated by one of lower status to one he regards as superior. The one of higher status may reciprocate, or may not, generally with no more than a nod of acknowledgment if.

Right. And there is nothing wrong with a farang initiating a wai to an older Thai person, in fact the farang should.
Respect your elders is a Western concept too.

Up to said "Farang" if he/she wishes to show respect via a wai in 'Thai culture' (of which they are no part)...

Not necessary however... as we are not part of that closed hierarchy system.

No wais here... just mutual respect. RIP.

I doubt they'd be very welcome at many drinking establishments now.

I reckon they should get the f**k outta dodge, quick. A bunch of drunken Thai guys will surely catch sight of them at some point..or any Thai guys for that matter, dunk or not.

Why should it look sincere? Wai-ing isn't a western thing so to expect him to be wai perfect is really asking too much. I always follow rule one.

    https://www.stickmanbangkok.com/read...02/10/why-wai/
I read through that. I would say its pretty good for anyone who has lived here for some time. For someone who has lived here for a long time - less good.

I suppose mainly because there is a whole universe of unspoken communication on going in the wai, and if you pay attention and know some of the basics, you can pick up an awful lot of information.

It is right to some extent. I never initiate a wai -and it is never expected. I work in a Thai environment that is quite "wai heavy", and I get a free pass from those in more senior positions than me. Smile and a nod seems to keep everyone happy. They appreciate the formal acknowledgement without a wai.

But when I am wai'ed by an appropriate person* - I return the wai (normally with a smile to counter balance if I effed it up). I think I have said before my secretary taught me an appropriate "one wai fits all".

First off, it IS appreciated when you return a wai. Thinking otherwise would be a mistake. You made an effort, acknowledged them and their culture. Not a terrible thing to do. But when you can read a wai a bit better - they are far from the same. Perfunctory wai, sincere wai, deeply respectful wai even the odd "f*ck you wai". All different. If you never wai you will be cut off from that information.

*an appropriate person. Hmm. That means knowing who to wai and who not. As noted service staff, cashiers, waitresses etc who are dishing out a "job wai" should not wai'ed in return. Except when - LOL........
