Thread: A month in a hospital bed

I came down with pneumonia recently, and the doc had me do a CT scan of the lungs too.

I've got a bloody big abscess on the right lung, and need to stay in the hospital for a month, for meds via IV. No pain at all, and the cough has gone.

My wardies are all incapable of speech, as they're all incapacitated due to their illnesses.

For the last week I've read and surfed the net, slept, and enjoyed takeouts brought over by my gf. What a doll.

Tomorrow I get a day pass, and will collect my PC loaded with movies, and upload more books to my Kindle.

I've got a notebook and pen, but I haven't been prone to any soul searching or desire to write a 99c Kindle novela just yet.

What have you done when spending extended periods of time in the hospital?

lying in bed for a month will do you more harm than the pneumonia.

i wonder why the meds have to be given iv.

How much did the CT scan cost you? I'm just curious as I also had a chest scan done a couple of months ago.

I believe the strongest antibiotics come in IV form.

lying in bed for a month will do you more harm than the pneumonia.

I make sure to take a lunchtime walk, and the only thing limiting me moving freely is drips attached to me, and doctor's orders to rest up.

How much did the CT scan cost you? I'm just curious as I also had a chest scan done a couple of months ago.

I haven't seen a breakdown of costs yet, but after a week, which included CT, plus other tests including for TB, I'm at THB70k.

Hereafter about 7k/day.

A CT scan was 8,000 Baht in my case.

I had an ear infection last year that saw one half of my head swell up like a balloon. Saw the ear specialist at the hospital and he prescribed IV antibiotics requiring a week as an in-patient.
Unacceptable as there would be difficulty getting Hong Tong, so I insisted on an out-patient treatment. Perfectly OK for IV treatment, and that's what I did, walked to the hospital each day, lay on a bed for half an hour, and that was that.
I would say, especially considering what you have paid so far, that the dollar signs rang up in the doctor's eyes as soon as he saw your scan. "Here's something that looks convincingly like needing to stay!"
If you feel OK and can walk around, I suggest you discharge yourself and complete the treatment as an outpatient.

Actually, if you haven't yet paid for the IV course, I suggest you find a GP locally and go to him/her each evening for your treatment.

Yes. There's far too many strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Thailand due to antibiotics being available over the counter.

Hospitals are very dangerous places, best to be avoided at all costs, even if means drinking your own pee!

I've had surgery six times in my life, as well as pneumonia twice. I've never spent more than a week in the hospital. Were I you, I'd get a second opinion. IV drip just gets the drugs into your system faster - a month of IV drugs sounds very excessive.

Hospitals are breeding grounds for all kinds of nasty crap - get out as soon as you can.

Couldn't you be IV'ed up at home.?

I heard about some guy who went to hospital, got cured of his pneumonia and then took a shower on the day he was to be discharged and contracted legionaires disease which killed him.

Cry out in pain every 2 hrs.
Demand a thigh shot of peth and after a few days of that you can begin to enjoy the vivid dreams and waking hallicinations.
Best 16 days I ever spent in bed.
Not so enjoyable straining to pee tho.

Most medications are availabe in oral form, so make sure this is not one of them. Find out the name of the antibiotic and do some research. A month in the hospital seems a bit excessive and possibly unecessary. There are a few antibiotics that only have IV preparations, but pneumonia is normally something that can be handled as an outpatient which has already been mentioned. Home infusion is also available in developed countries, but I have never heard of it here in Thailand.

I tend to agree with you. I'm doing as much research on lung abscecces as possible. It seems they do need to be treated by antibiotics over an extended period of time. And I was allergic to the first two days of IV administered ezythromycin - my face swelled up to the size of a football. That was just visiting the hospital for the IV infusions.

So I was admitted, and the next CT is booked for 2-3 weeks from now. The initial CT was fucking scary. Right lung totally white, with a black hole in the middle.

Going for a second, 3rd opinion only sees the price drop or a a few days less in hospital.
It is the flesh trade. No different than a meat market.

A friend has prolly the most diseased lungs ever and he takes medicine at home.
Mind, he's a walking miracle.

I missed the abscess when I first read it, so I back off of my initial assessment a bit as that sounds quite serious. Although I'd still get a second opinion.

Keep in mind - the pneumonia is done and dusted.

It's the bastard abscess that's grounding me.

Happy my temperature is back to normal. When my gf came around my place last Thursday it was 41°c. And I still didn't want to go to the hospital.

I'm on 7 bags of antibiotics and whatnot/day. Not sure all can be replaced by oral meds.
