Government now says low key entertainment is permitted

Government now says low key entertainment is permitted

The Thai authorities have today said that low-key entertainment will be permitted as long as it takes place ‘away from plain view and behind closed doors.’

Bars, pubs and clubs can now operate normally as long as nobody passing by can see or hear what is going on, as indicated by the announcement of the Interior Ministry on Sunday.

Weddings, ordinations, fairs and ceremonies are allowed but there must be no music and no displays of ‘excitement.’

Many public shows and performances have been suspended and no time frame for rescheduling events has been given.

The government has confirmed its statement on Thursday that all public entertainment and official occasions remain banned for the thirty-day period.

This clarification was made after concerns that people working in the entertainment sector, especially in low paid employment, may not survive if their places of work were closed for a month.

The military government is attempting to keep harmony during the grieving period that is expected to last for a year.

It is mindful, it says, that much of the entertainment sector relies on trade and tourism.

What a relief it's a naturist scrabble weekend, with lashings of tea and ginger nuts

And yet I still can't watch a movie on HBO in the privacy of my own home. What a nanny state.

If there is logic behind which channels can and cannot be viewed it escapes me. All the international news channels, sports, cartoon and nature channels are normal programming. Movie channels are blocked. Go figure.

It really is a bizarre country, indeed. As you rightly observe, one is prevented from the innocent pleasure of watching certificated movies on television channels yet they have declared to the world that filthy sex tourists may now still travel to the Kingdom and avail themselves of unlimited prostitution in the thousands of brothels that masquerade as beer bars and go-go bars provided the volume controls are set at pianissimo.

I must say, I really did think they would close these ghastly places down out of respect for their much revered King.

    Its a disgrace.

A several days ago I called Truevisions about this and specifically asked about compensation for services not being delivered. The girl I spoke to had no answers but a couple of days ago a service rep called me and said that they still had no final answer as to how this problem was going to resolved but he seemed to indicate that some type of service upgrades would be offered in lieu of a discount on the monthly bill. I was actually pleasantly surprised that they even contacted me.

Thailand would cease to exist. That bargain with the devil was made long ago. And good of it, the world needs a Thailand.

Yeah...yet, they still don't get your reasoned inquiry, Humbert.
Nor should you expect them to.
    Thai paradoxes.

I'd be quite curious as to know what the "service upgrades" offered would entail.
    Keep us posted...

On day three, I complained about the same thing. I calmly explained that I'm paying major baht in order to watch English content and most especially news in English. The girl said she would pass my comments on but I never heard back.

Personally, my guess is that the government was waiting for the stories about the succession and the individual involved to drop out of the news cycle.

Some of the movie channels are back but they have made the colors more 'low key'. Color is a key component of grieving in Thailand.
I called Truevision and told them I would only pay half my bill. Waiting for an answer from someone in management.

The demand for black attire does produce some bizarre and unintended results.

I'm in Bangkok for a few days and it's really quite noticeable just how many ladies look as if they're off to a cocktail party, rather than work. Obviously, they wish to conform to the mourning convention but their wardrobe evidently only held one black dress, a slinky little, chiffony number that can only be worn with the dress, high- heeled shoes they got to match. Walking down the BTS steps this morning surrounded by legions of ladies clattering and tottering their way down in black figure - hugging cocktail dresses was truly one of those bizarre events that can only happen in Thailand.

The young lady at Asoke BTS who managed to procure a black T shirt after no doubt no mean effort and expense was the standout today. True it covered her shoulders and was so black light seemed to disappear into it but the effect was somewhat diminished by the message emblazoned in silver at the front declaring " I PARTY ALL NIGHT ".

Still, it's the thought that counts.

Is sporting a black concksock the thong idea.

The thonglor remains the same but the malarkey lingers on.
