Taxi driver jailed for cheating tourists
Four Chinese tourists were cheated when an unlicensed taxi driver charged them 2450 baht to take them only six kilometers.
Surachai Sritabthai was arrested last night at his room in Soi Ratchada 10.
The court today heard Sritabthai had charged the Chinese nationals 2450 baht to take them from Airport Rail Link Phayathai to their Samsen Road hotel on Tuesday night.
The four tourists had paid him the charge and took photo of the displayed 2540 on the fare meter and the car’s licence plate 1 Mor Gor 666 to show to the hotel staff.
He was later identified by the tourists on video call to Pattaya to be the taxi driver who overcharged them.
The tourists are still touring Pattaya and will return to Bangkok early next week to identify him.
According to the inquiry, the driver claimed he mistakenly pushed a wrong button which displayed the registered code number of the fare meter 2540 when collecting fare from the tourists, instead of the fare button.
But police said cheating driver could display this code number to cheat unaware foreign tourists that it is the taxi fare.
However, it was discovered that he had borrowed his brother’s car and altered the license plate from 665 to 666 and that he does not have a licence to drive a taxi.
He has been sent to jail for one-month and fined 1000 baht
