Reckon they didn't do their homework.
There are LOADS of resources online to check out your destination before you book.
    Did someone say google earth?
    No excuse these days.

The beaches and waters around Koh Lipe - Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach especially - are fantastic, but the problems begin the minute you take a detour from the beach and the main street.

Much of this area is a complete and utter shit tip, and it's clear that no thought or care has been given to anything other than taking the tourist baht and offering as little as possible in return. T.I.T.

Mental innit? Even the main street is called Walking Street.

Fortunately, the wifebeater-wearing chav count is non-existent, and it's too far off the beaten track for the tight cnut backpackers as well.

The locals just need to do some tidying up every now and then.

i was there with my wife about 4 months ago.....the beaches are beautiful but don't venture off the grounds of your accommodation (except by sea) because a large percentage of the island is a complete shit hole....the article in the OP is correct.... seemingly abandoned construction sites and garbage is everywhere. i went off on a bicycle ride to take a look around one afternoon and i really wish i hadn't. it really was a let down to see the state of the place "behind the curtain". my wife didn't join me and her experience was much more positive.

my advice for a pleasant holiday on lipe: get dropped off directly at your resort by boat...only leave the resort to go diving or snorkling...leave by boat.

    that's asking a bit much.

Took these on another island on a New Year Trip 6 or 7 years ago.

When discussing it with locals, it was said that the cleaners had gone home for New Years holiday 4 days ago, so no one here to clean the beach.

Ahhhh Thailand *pinches its cheek in playful manner*

'Every hotel on the island needs to fix the rubbish problem. "We don't deny that. We know how important it is and if there's a lot of trash nobody will come and our business will suffer.
The guests didn't complain to us but if they did would have tried to help them.
    Really? How?

Fancied it in feb, but luckily was told the same things and review sites helped.
Almost blindly booked from looking at google pics was so desperate to get away

Went to nearby Ko Bulone instead, tiny, quaint, stunning, clean but boring as hell. No electric 6am-6pm

Didn't realise Koh Lipe was so bad, was given the impression it was still 'new'

It is nice, but dull. Perfect for just lying on the beach.
There is the sea gypsy village in the middle of the island that you can visit.
We went there in the off season after the resort had closed. A friend who's high up in the Forests and Parks got the kitchen and a couple of rooms opened up for us. We had the beaches to ourselves. Remote, private, nice.

Some Lipe pics from earlier this year:

Arriving off the shore of Pattaya Beach:

    Breakfast on Sunrise Beach:

These pics don't show the rotting rubbish strewn around the back alleys, but it's quite amazing how Thais can take something so beautiful and, in no time at all, turn it into a stinking, messy hole when faced with the lure of the lucre. I reckon they must have their own version of the western proverb of being unable to polish a turd- in reverse.

By all means make your money from tourism, but try doing it in a semi-responsible way at the very least.

Cheers pal. It's probably my favourite island in Thailand at the mo, but you do wonder what will become of the place when you see the state of places like Phi Phi and read about the recent reported problems with rubbish collection on other islands.

The grabbing hands and all that.

Sadly this is becoming the only way for many of Thailand's beaches.

So many beauty spots have become puss oozing sores.

I left a day early I was so bored.
Shame really because I really wanted to enjoy it more but it's so small.

The sea gypsys were friendly and obviously used to a few farangs in town, many kids asked me how I was, smiled, and I stopped for a chat with a couple of old guys.

    Even asking directions was easy!

Was coconut bar open? Chit lived upstairs so I assume it must have been, unless he had a day job on shore during low season

Thais burn much of the trash on these islands. So take your pick: see it, or breathe it.

I did a pic thread on Koh Lipe earlier in the year. We found it to be a very laid back island and an easy place to relax into.

As for the garbage situation, they have a barge which comes to the island to collect refuse and every Monday they have a program where tourists are welcome to join the locals in collecting rubbish. You get a free lunch and a t-shirt for your efforts.
You're fat,Ill fro you in the river
