Not so much an impulse I guess, more a necessity. About a week or so ago, I'd read that the serial numbers of older Rolex watches are on the case behind the bracelet at the 6 o'clock position. I'd never checked mine so curiousity got the better of me. Unfortunately, removing the bracelet caused me to break the spring pin (it must have gone into shock, never having moved in more than 30 years). Anyway, ordered what was a ridiculously cheap set of replacement pins from Amazon US, and six days later here they are. Also came with a couple of small tools for pin removal.

Knew it was real, but nice to have checked:

and the pin set with varying sizes.

Fake Lego footballers from Lazada. Certainly makes playing Lego with my daughter more interesting.

^^ I claimed my Old Man's Rolex last year and it's in dire need of repair. The glass is chipped at the edge, the magnifier is smashed, the bevel is stuck in place and I need another link on the bracelet.

I'm terrified of the cost of this, especially after scrolling through the site:

Anyone got any experience with this?

That is serious damage and there is no way around the cost of the repair parts. You would have to be more specific with the model of watch to know how much the parts will cost to repair, and a pic would also help. Then you have to find a qualified watchmaker to repair it, which could be difficult in Thailand.

Yes, Datejust, circa 1987 when bought new. The model number is apparently on the case between the bracelet lugs at the 12 o'clock position (I'm not going to take that off).

Is there a word for that thing where you're at the stage that you haven't actually made an impulse buy but you're going through the motions of self-justifications and rationalizations that is leading you inexorably down the road to an impulse buy?

Because I'm kinda on that track, whatever the word for it is...

Regardless of cost, it would still be worthwhile getting it repaired by an authorised dealer as you will then have something of infinitely more value. You probably don't have the original box or receipt from your Dad, but the service receipt which will have the individual watch reference number will be as good in lieu.

That is worth repairing and could be collectable. The bezel is easy and not too expensive to repair and/or replace, and it will need a new crystal due to the damage to the magnifier and the chip in the crystal. That is not as bad of as you may think.

It's not green, must have just been the light when I took the photo, and between the lugs isn't as polished as the rest of the case. Here are a couple more:

Ok good. The first pic was terrible. That looks good, PAG! Some nice watches you and Dirk have. I own a deepsea sea dweller myself and owned a submariner in the past. Rolex is a sound investment for anyone to make.

I rarely wear the Rolex these days, a Cartier Roadster which is now about 15 years old is usually on my wrist. It could be a collectors item now, as I believe Cartier stopped making them around 2012 or so.

Yeah 30,000 baht in Bangkok after breaking the glass a few years back.

That was for a new face under warranty and service.

The price of the service alone is 30,000 and it gets sent back to Switzerland

^^^ PAG, if the serial number starts with an 'R' the date is 1987 or 1988.

    L... 1989, E... 1990, etc etc

I have a good document that explains the Rolex serial numbering if you're interested. Just send me a PM and I can email it to you.

^^ I had a Rolex serviced in Bangkok a few years ago... was it on Wireless Road?... and it was the most expensive service I've ever had. And the watch kept even worse time afterwards.

That’s a good point, I never thought of that. Not that important though as this watch will never be for sale.

I was under the assumption that they would have sent it to KL, rather that Switzerland.
