Religion. Islam is the old enemy of Christendom and even though Europe is no longer Christian those hundreds of years of hatred and religious wars have left their marks. It's not just bigotry and xenophobia that cause such a large outpouring of anti-Muslim hatred, after all the same kind of vitriol is not directed against other immigrants (even though they're not too popular either). It's religion and history, for many centuries one of the ways Europeans defined themselves was as "Not Mohammedans", that kind of history does not disappear overnight or even in a few decades.
