Lightbulb Review Scampy's New Film Here

Ok, it's not a movie as such at just over seven minutes in duration, more of a trailer advertising 4 travel mockumentries, none of which actually exist and were made from travel footage taken over the past 4 years.

The original WALKING WITH LADYBOYS which some of you will have already seen, has been compressed from 26 minutes long to 1 minute 44 seconds, the other three short chapters are:

    WALKING WITH THE KHMER ROUGE
    WALKING WITH COWS
    WALKING WITH JESUS

The soundtrack features JS BACH, ENDORPHINE, KATE BUSH, PROKOFIEV, BECK, SAWASDEE JAO and a song called 'Book Early' I made 7 years ago which features over the end title trailer.

The film features a very well known TD member, a big black traffic warden from Tottenham, and even Sandra commenting on her country's rediculous religious rituals.

I have taken on board the constructive criticism from the original so I hope this is better, please feel free to comment and suggest ways I may not have thought of to use it to get me out of the mess I am in.

Thanks to DD those in Thailand can view it on Dailymotion, or else there is YouTube which has all the other shite I've done on it.

Please let the bar load an inch before playing so it doesn't keep stopping.

Well it doesn't look as though I am up for an Oscar nomination, people could at least take the piss - I'm taking advice and 'putting myself out there'!

Scamp, only had a quick look so far but first impression is that your camera really lets you down. Annoying when you can see nice shots but it's blurred. Might be worth a small investment to get a newer camcorder.

Great name BTW 'Camera On Films'.

And like the last film (the one with the last shot being you in the water barrel) it ended badly I thought. End of the Kate Bush song seemed like the ideal cut off point to me.

Watched it through again Scamp. Defo improvement on the last vids you made and the Phillipines section was the the best, wished that was a bit longer really. I still think you should have cut off the video at about 6 minutes though, and I didn't like the repeating of shots in it just because they were good shots (the tiger/loso). Nice shots but I already saw them 2-3 minutes ago, do I have to see them again?

Certainly an improvement on your last vid though, what's coming next?

Unfortunately that's just the quality you get after compressing the whole thing to Quicktime and viewing it on a webpage. I think there is a way to get it clearer on the web but I fear it may take much longer to load.

Defo improvement on the last vids you made and the Phillipines section was the the best, wished that was a bit longer really.
Thanks, I utilized pretty much all the footage I had of the Phillipines but with more stock I agree it could have been a little longer.

you should have cut off the video at about 6 minutes though
Yep, the end is a little messy and drawn out, I think I'm trying to hard to squeeze in as much as I can, there's too much I want to use and I need to know what to sacrifice. Could have even maybe done with one more segment before ending, it's a bit MTV/Natural Born Killers - it's like it doesn't want to end.

Nice shots but I already saw them 2-3 minutes ago, do I have to see them again?
I thought you'd be referring to the road/bike shots - the tiger I like as an opener/closer.

    what's coming next?
Hopefully a foot in the door in the industry, though they don't use camcorders and laptops so I've fallen at the first hurdle.

Why don't you go back to the UK, get a proper paying job and put youself through a course in movie directing?

There are loads of people out there with talent that you are in competition with. You should give youself a fighting chance by learning proper film making techniques which you could do at school.

I could only watch the dailymotion link- Youtube still banned here.
Enjoyed it, although hampered by terrible picture and sound quality.
Nice hobby, but I wouldn't give up your day job Scampy. If you've got the ambition, maybe do a course as SB suggests.

The film is entertaining, scene-by-scene, but there's not much that ties it all together except for the recurring character(s).

Since you've shortened it so much I think you should use a less lossy compression scheme so that the video looks better. It's hard to watch the high motion scenes which get heavily pixelated.

The next thing you do, instead of a travel impressions video, why not write a short story or a documentary you want to do, and then attempt to film it, i.e. a more traditional type of film?

That way you'd probably get better at the aspects that do not quite work in your recent productions.

Not bad Scamp....But 'zooming in' is out (the shots of religious icons). Instead try to zoom out while moving closer to the subject..Takes a while to master it but it gives an interesting effect.

Maybe drop the solarization effect too...It's a cheap home movie effect.

Are you using an external mic??? If not, get one. Audio will be ten times better.

    Good onya.

I'm no expert on this sort of thing, but i thought it was good, i enjoyed it.

I agree with Bkkmadness that it felt like it should of finished around the 6 minute 20 mark when the music fades out.

I also agree with Frankenstein that maybe next you need to do something with a bit more of a story to it. The phillipines part with all the crazy religious stuff looked like it had scope to be extended into a more in depth piece.

I'd like to see the fuller versions of the Phils, Cambodia and Isaan.

Seeing WWL at the weekend on a 50 inch plasma screen was amazing.

I'm sure that financing dollars will ultimately come with persistence.

I enjoyed it. I'd like to see your movies in higher quality though as the flv files are really poor and take away a lot.

^ It takes away loads of quality which is a shame because the original quality is superb considering it was all recorded on an amateur Panasonic NV-GS1, which you can see in the one shot that it didn't record:- The shot of me and the camera flecked with blood was 're-shot' a couple of weeks ago near my apartment in Muang Thong Thani using a similar camera and some pigs blood. I did actually get blood on my face filming the flagellations last April but had wiped my face before I realized the comic oppertunity.

I wish I had done some filming while I was in Hong Kong, I could have called that one WALKING WITH LOUIS VUITTON and asked members of the public if they would be willing to sacrifice an item of designer clothing to save a child in Mozambique - that would have been interesting.

I don't think I have what it takes to be a presenter I don't have the clear confident voice, I have a forgettable face and I 'um' and 'err' too much, but I do enjoy coming up with attention grabbing shots.

Whilst in Samui that time (early 2006) I sought permission to throw myself onto a crocodile and wrestle it but permission was not granted despite me offering a few quid. In hindsight this would have been unoriginal and dangerous. Steve Irwin died six months later so it wouldn't have been in good taste either.
