A good reason for terrible Chinese tourist behaviour might be found in the infamous cultural revolution when Mao basically destroyed centuries of culture, tradition and values which form the core and identity of a nation.

So devoid of such a core the Chinese people can't really be called the inheritors of the China that existed for such a long period of time, they are actually children of a new country that didn't want anything from them but obedience and just limited itself to giving them the bare basics and a history that barely understands anything of it's past, besides being heavily edited to fit in the party's guidelines,

The end result is as expected with people who were raised with the lies of the regime and it's propaganda telling them they stand head and shoulders over everyone when in truth they are nothing and are worth the same amount of respect.

I spent a few years in Taiwan and it seems they are the real inheritors of Chinese culture. I got the impression their behaviour was much like that of people in old China.

They are known for having soft, sincere hearts, and I found them the nicest Chinese people out of those I met in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Moreover, the National Palace Museum in Taipei has over 600,000 pieces of art....more than in Beijing. They were going to be put into safe storage when Chinese troops were retreating from the Japanese, but many were spirited away, which is apparently quite a story in itself.
They reside in air-conditioned vaults in the mountainside in Taipei and only one sixth can be displayed at any one time.



I once visited Shanghai briefly about 23 years ago, and watched pedestrians whilst standing on a walkway overlooking a very crowded street. I thought there was something odd about the scene, and then it struck me : nobody was smiling, laughing or joking. I stood there stunned as they walked along straight-faced.

The Mandarin-speakers took over the island when Chiang Kai Shek retreated there after fighting Mao Tse Tung.

Mandarin's the official language, and the language used in the education system.
The minor language is Taiwanese...basically the Fujian dialect. Many there speak it.

Fujian farmers settled in Taiwan a couple of hundred years ago, and there was a later wave too.

Watched a short travel docu (bbc or cnn, can't remember) - said that there's an island at the southern tip of Taiwan. The people there speak a dialect which is linguistically similar to Ivatan, which is a dialect of the Batanes grp of isalnds at the northern tip of PI. The ppl also looked more similar to Filipinos (in features) than the typical Chinese.

When I visited Taipei this year, I found it very clean & orderly. People were very courteous & disciplined too. Maybe part of it was because Taiwan was colonized by Japan for many years. Japan had to give it up as part of its surrender during WW2. On another note, the National Palace Museum was indeed amazing. A must-see, if you like history & art.

To be fair, they are getting better.

It was only 5-10 years ago the average Chinese had the means to travel abroad for the first time--- and they were pretty bad back then.

I work in tourism in Australia and the pool on Green Island Resort where I worked was often closed because of a Chinese floater - yes, they used to shit in the pool. They used to get off the boat and flick their cigarette butts into the pristine waters of the Great Barrier Reef national park.

They were extremely uncivilised.

But they have evolved since then. They behave much better now. The young people are fine - and actually very nice if you take the time to get to know them.

Give it another 5-10 years, and they will be fine
