Hi fred, 1st time to post on this thread but not new to TD. I would listen to Davis as he has lived in Asia for a long time. The others give good advice too. If they say not to build a house yet, just rent first, then that's what I would do. U might not like it in Isaan. Btw, I'm a Filipina, and now consider myself well traveled. Am posting this frm Vientiane. Fleecing a Farang is not unique to Thailand, it happens everywhere. I had a classmate frm uni, her mom got married to a Brit. Her mom was 40+ at the time, I think. Brit built a 5M pesi house for her, so I've heard. Few yrs after, I heard frm my parents that they separated & the house was for sale. The mom gambled & made Brit bankrupt. We felt sorry 4 d Brit. I'm not saying that ur wife is bad. But as they all say, maybe it's best to wait b4 buildinf a house. Maybe get a Tefl cert in the meantime, if u intend 2 teach. Maybe sell ur appliances, buy frm Thailand instead. Lots of appliance stores in Th. All the best to u. Pardon the typos, posting frm fone.

If you're thinking of teaching, I hope the school that you find employment at doesn't expect you teach writing paragraphs!

I was thinking that myself. Must be the spirits or lack their of. May help the water run off or so the builder would say. Damn immigrant laborers. And no I don't mean the Germans. They built themselves some pretty solid stuff here in the brew town. They also built the Jews some real fancy brick houses as well. I mean huge and fancy. Funny how the world goes around.

It may be somewhat of an optical illusion due to camera angle. I'll let you know next January as we plan a visit Dec thru Jan now that the paperwork is in order. I'm looking to eventually put an addition onto the fish crib and will not be settling for any of that slapdashery if that is in fact what it is.

Fish out. P.S. my great great great granddad was a German. That's why my gf says I can be soooo cruel sometimes. But am mostly kind and light-hearted. Have a great day.

But it comes with a satellite television dish... Oops wrong place. I'll try to dig into that one. I know I'm a it of a perfectionist and hate to settle for less than the best. That is why on big concreet pours I never go with the cheepest bids.

Fish out got to crash now. You all behave now. Yea right........

I’ve not only never said anything remotely like that but amongst other things I wrote the following which makes my own views / actions very clear:

My ‘new’ Thai partner and I have now been together for 14 years, married for 9; all my UK / offshore assets are in joint accounts (single signature access), all I own in Thailand is in their name (house, land, car, motorbikes, etc), and because of caps on capital / interest rates and most of my capital here currently going on building a house (in their name, on land in their name) most of my capital here is also in their name. I have had a pension since I retired, 50% of which will continue to be paid to my partner when I die. I’m worth considerably more and much less of a drain on ‘our’ resources dead than alive.

Would I recommend anyone else to do that? No, not under any circumstances, but even if the worst happens and I lose every penny / baht I have I won't regret it and I will still have a reasonable pension on which I can live here quite comfortably. You don’t.

Oh come onnn … it was based on what you wrote. If it’s “worth $75k” or you “get $75k” out of it THAT’S ALL YOU’VE GOT which is what matters.

    That's a matter of opinion.

Mine would be that if you deliberately choose to be unemployed and to run out of money and end up dependent on your in-laws rather than continue to earn a living and support your family that's not being a parent so much as being rather stupid and very selfish.

In my experience that used to be the case and 27 - 30k a month was the going rate for teachers with 'quickie' TEFLs but no degrees.

Since then a degree is needed for teaching anywhere and those who were previously eking out a living at 27 - 30k a month in a government school have all been replaced by "teachers" earning 3k (that's three thousand) a month plus free accommodation at the school plus some free meals. I live in a rural area in Issan, I know the local (Thai) teachers, some of my in-laws kids go to the local schools, and I see one of these "teachers" occasionally at a local noodle shop when one of the other teachers takes pity on "maa-dam" and invites her out for a bowl of kao-lao.

While some may still get away with it in town, the old standby of teaching just doesn't happen in the sticks anymore.

Like I was saying you may pay for this and they give you that. If you do build make sure you have all the details worked out in writing.

It seems the consensus among the members is to test the water first before diving in head first. I believe in good faith that is what most have tried to say. We all just express ourselves a bit differently often formed through personal experiences sometimes clouded by emotion either consciously or unconsciously. What I'm trying to say here Freddie is that I have the oratory prowess of a fish. My own experience concerning travel to Laos was not unlike swimming in Louisiana. I first threw the dog in the water to check for alligators before I jumped in.

By this I mean that the gf wanted to go visit her mom many years ago and not too keen on going myself I threw her in the water so to speak. She made it back ok with some great travel tales and some stunning photos of the area. The rest is history. The house in Laos came years later but that's another story in itself.

$50k / 1.5m baht will build you a more than reasonable house in a Thai village, even with your friendly local Brit expert ripping you off.

Let's be brutally realistic, though. If your life savings and assets at 60, including house, are around $75k then you're obviously not some high earning computer geek who can make a good living anywhere. Your chances of finding work locally as a 60 year old unskilled farang that will give you an income and enable you to support a wife and child are zero. Nil. Non-existent.

If, as you said last year, you are making enough in the States to support her then maybe that's what you should be doing as, by what you've said here, you won't be able to once you move here. There's no point in pretending you will.

You may be able to help her out by getting her some training as a hair-dresser or something where she can make some money, but from what you've said here you're living in dreamland if you think you're going be able to find a job in Thailand.

    I'm beginning to think
But you are still posting and telling not only Fred but everybody else what YOU think...you must be bored pal.

Now you got me feeling sorry for the kid. I'll have to go there and see this for myself. If it's that bad I may just have them bust it up and do it over as a gift to the family. At least they appear to all be pitched the same way. Otherwise If you dropped a marble on the top it would be like playing a game of Pachinko.

Anyway the point, for those who completely may have missed the boat, is to read up on all the other f-ups in building with the craftsmen/builders at hand. And don't rush into anything like a brick wall, ect.

As for this house I'm sure the kid is happy just to have it. He earned it by himself so he has that going for him. It beats paying rent to someone else. The gf says now he is saving for a new car. Cool,he drove us around in the boat maybe he'll drive us around in his car.

No No Prag, I was not there and had nothing to do with this at all. I'm half a world away in more ways than one. The gf said he was building this place in a town not far from the Farm house and I just asked if she had any pics is all.

These were taken a while back. I asked for more recent ones and she messaged me some more last night. I guess they had the house blessing just a few days ago. Those picks did not have the light fixtures placed outside ect.

I was using them as an example of what the locals are doing as of late in the village. This was not designed by or built for Frenchie. I mean Falang. Same same.

I know I shouldn't, but this is in the dining room. Go ahead take your shot.

A fan is to be installed in the square by the ceiling. I have seen pics of other rooms but don't have them. Maybe just as well because I don't want to hear about it.

Freddie you don't have to thank me for pulling cover and flack. You see I'm a bit of a philanthofish.

To put this to bed on a happy note a bit of a house warming party.

Now I hope in a year or two Freddie comes back with a build thread and a house warming party. Good luck to you all in whatever your endeavors.

^^Surely a fan fitted that high to a ceiling would be an extraction fan as per a toilet room?
