You don't see many ' Thai Houses ' in England because they have a choice in England .
Choice of materials . Styles . Design.

They want a pleasant functioning home . Not a basic set of rooms .
Who the Hell would want a Thai home anywhere if they have the choice of better ?

..... and there's quite a shortage of Termites in Guildford !

Then she went back to work until I came back in September for the wedding, which took place, like I said after legal measures were taken in Bangkok, at her mom's. She has been there ever since. And seeking out my other posts online? Don't we have anything better to do with our time? A little obsessed with me perhaps? Sorry John, I love my wife, and don't have a penchant for 5' 5" Englishmen, overweight, pot bellied and bald with 8 teeth missing and an std. Oh wait, did I assume there?
No assumptions, Freddy, just trying to make some sense of what you've posted and trying to see anything that makes sense in what you say you're doing. There doesn't seem to be much chance of either.

If I've understood you correctly, what you're now saying is that although she was the only one in the entire family earning a decent living, employed in a hotel (let's leave out what 'working in a hotel' means in most Issan families), she's now unemployed and has been unemployed for the nine months since you got married?

... so who's supporting your new family, let alone the extended family your wife was previously supporting?

Freddy, the money to support a family has to come from somewhere. Based on what you've posted it previously came from your wife's job, which she doesn't have any more ... and now now you're about to give up your own job, with very little in the kitty and no pension for 8 years, and no marketable skills or experience ... and you keep insisting that you're 'not stupid' and you're putting a lot of thought into this ...

Impossible to comment on the quality of any build from a video / photos, as many who have relied on them for "progress reports" from their builders have found out to their cost.

I don't know the price / spec so can't comment with the knowledge you appear to have, but as it was built by 'Alan the Builder' I'd say it very probably was quite expensive since even a few years ago Alan the Builder's price was 25,000 baht per square metre for an average spec, which was at the high end of the range and compared directly to builders like PD House for a build to a similar spec.

I've no idea what he charges now, but comments on both him and his builds are 'mixed' so without personal experience I can't comment further.

Agree with all your points, David, but I thought of that one in particular today. My builder is excellent, as I've said, and so are all his specialist teams, so I was surprised when his electricians came back yesterday to start installing all the cables in the conduits to see today that although there was clearly an earth cable to all the sockets and the water heaters there was very obviously none coming out of the conduits for the ceiling fans.

Not really vital as we're unlikely to touch them if there's a short, and the blades are plastic, but grounding everything should be routine. My builder's been away since Tuesday while the plasterers are finishing off and is back tomorrow (Udon's storm permitting) so I'll be interested to see if he picks it up.
Must be a really good specialist team then
It's all comparative, but for Thailand 'yes' they are pretty good. It's apparently routine for even some of the best sparkies here not to earth ceiling fittings, so he was simply doing what is accepted practice here for various perfectly understandable reasons (even if you probably don't understand them).

Since you have no idea of the size or construction of the house, other than it compares to a 10 million baht build by PD House, you're hardly in any position to comment on it.

I'm not "slagging someone off for paying around a third of that". It doesn't matter if Freddy is paying a third of what I'm paying or a thirtieth, or thirty times as much.

I can afford what I'm paying but he can't afford what some expat builder who has apparently lied to him about his legal position has convinced him he needs to pay.

If I lose the house plus everything we own jointly in Thailand and offshore in the UK I'll be a bit disappointed after a dozen years together, and a bit surprised that I wasn't taken to the cleaners before when there was rather more in the kitty as we hadn't spent it, if that was the intention, but I'll still have a reasonable pension to live off quite comfortably here.

Freddy, on the other hand, will be flat broke because he listened to people like you who were happy to take him to the cleaners and he yet again "trusted the wrong people".

Lol is there anything incuded? you see your problem is not understanding that the cost of building a house is like a piece of string it can go on due to spec and changes of spec in the phases...
What part of "say 5 mill complete to the same spec as PD House - that's literally half the price" did you not understand?

If I had detailed / considered any "changes of spec in the phases" then I would no longer have been comparing like for like, making the comparison invalid and as pointless as your posts.

What Freddy needs to do is wake up to reality before it kicks him in the arse.

I'm sure you can give him all the advice he wants about how he can own a house here, how you can build it for him at a cut price, etc, but others here are giving him the advice he needs, whether he wants it or not, and whether it costs you a nice profit or not.

... and unlike Freddy and his wife, we didn't get married after spending five days together then six months apart - and I rather doubt many other people with successful marriages here did either.

Should we really be giving publicity to the man who is "Alan the Builder" ? Members of this forum are banned automatically from his. He is not fair to us so why should we help him ?

    Indeed, Can...
Fair play - especially when he doesn't have the finest reputation as a local contractor [less, his funky provincial forum].

Almost predictable to the member that referenced him above.
    Consider the source.

John, I'm sorry if you can't make any sense of what I posted, because it's pretty clear to anyone else here. And, I never said my wife's income supported her family anywhere. Family have a few that help out. I knew reality long before I came here for more opinions John, trust me. I never go into something unless I'm sure of all the legal ramifications and total cost of a project, and that I will have enough to live on until I retire, which is 5 years max,2 years min., not 8. No builder lied to me about any legal matters that I can see. I didn't get married after spending 5 days with my wife. We spent the whole month of April seeing each other, then I came back, after daily speaking with her. Funny how you think your marriage is going to last and assume mine isn't. And I'm wondering how you think I have no marketable skills. I know jobs are scarce for all foreigners, no matter the skill level, with the exception of teaching English, which will always be in demand, degree or not. You have no idea what I've done for work except what I've said here. I've also worked in the restaurant business for years, done internet work, and a host of other jobs. Most I won't be able to use here for sure, but some I will. And I have listened to all advice here. Not sure what advice I'll use yet. Time will tell what happens between now and the time I'm living there.

Fred if you'd just take the time to write in paragraph's then may be, just may be, you wouldn't get up so many peoples noses. After all you are a self proclaimed 'clever person'. But in writing the way you do automatically contradicts that claim. It's not hard.

Go kid someone else Fred. You don't have to publish your post until you have edited it.

Edit: And then you can go back, after publication, and edit it. Simple innit?

Probably Burger King as that's the home of the Whopper!

Meets girl online, goes to Thailand , meets in person. In total spent no more than a month together. She gets pregnant, he unemployable in Thailand.
He doesn't speak Thai, does she speak English more than bargirl english?.
She works in a hotel. No education so probably no higher than room cleaner but more likely in house rub an' tug dept.
He believes her parents think he's the ducks nuts because he helps out on the farm and knows how to treat a woman ( )
Not to mention she has a daughter already (husband?)
I'd be interested to know at what point did she tell him about the daughter.
Never mind build advice, sounds like this bloke needs life advice, what a dildo this can only end in disaster.

The girl/lady he met online he dumped after sharing a few lunch dates with her. His current lady/wife he fell in love with when their eyes met in the lobby of the hotel.

A little harsh their Cujo. I met my wife in the Sawatdee Hotel, Soi 10 Pattaya, she was one of the receptionists, and educated.

Just quietly, it may not be his (Fred's) fault.

If he is using a proxy server and masking his true IP, most likely through the dark web, (Tor Browser) even though he may paragraph his posts, they appear as one block.

    Just a gut feeling.

If that's a true statement, one might pose the question the need to use a 'Mask'.

The Forum Admin could have a wee look and confirm either way.

A Tor Browser, or the like usually route through Europe and commonly The Netherlands ... the bastions of free speech.

    Just thinking out aloud.
