Couldn't tell you much about Shanghai, just been the once for a weekend to play cricket and events are a little hazy plus we were quite limited in where we went and what we did. I do recall a large expat population though and all that entails - probably on a par with if not more so than BKK.

I'd consider it as an option though. China has always fascinated me.

Actually on further consideration you should definitely go with the Shanghai option.

Because free accommodation from me when I visit.

The wife wants to take over the London house and remodel but would love to visit Shanghai month on month off.
There are loads of international schools in and around London full of kids from East and South East Asia.

Huge fan. That was my poor attempt at humor. Clearly well short of the standard set by the slapper himself.

Which is why I hate him!

Look at the 2 posters on here who live in China Bob, a right couple of miserable bastards

Get yourself back to the UK with all of your family around you . You can get some season tickets for the Spurs now. Better food, entertainment, beer, what more do you need?

Rugby knowing you and you will have that too.

    It's a no brainer.

You will always have your holidays to fleet off where you fancy.

I bet youve made some good friends in your eleven years here and Thailand will feel like home now but China is no Thailand

That is just this stint, I have friends going back the 25 years since I first lived and worked here. Funnily enough one of them is costantly claimed by the friendless warrior from Chiang Mai as his 'mate' having met him first a few years ago.....

    For my two cents worth,

I've been 30+ years in Asia, always said I would not live in China, ended up doing just that about 5 years ago, too good a deal to miss, my 3 youngest kids were here for 3 + years, the 2 youngest speak quite good mandarin, and will always have the basics if they ever want to take it up in a more serious manner.

Both back in Thailand now in the Tri lingual program. The 2 eldest back off to the UK.

It's difficult now for me to get out, obviously simply walking away is an option, but the company is doing well and finding a successor is not easy, China is complex and challenging in my line of work, this was the reason I never wanted to come in the first place.

Having said that it's still a good gig. Shanghai was never really my scene, I have always been close in Jiangsu province, Wuxi and Suzhou, if you can swing it Suzhou is great, lakes, walked, hash house harriers, pubs, etc.

As mentioned earlier watch the taxes and the package, you then need to get money out if your going to be paid locally, RMB has also preformed well in recent years.

Shanghai is expensive, yes there are many options, pubs, etc, but as expensive as London for imported goods (beer).

If you decided on Shanghai, I would also watch the commute, travel is difficult across the river during rush hour. I would look to live near to work.

Rather the passionate environment of a full Welsh Rugby stadium than the pompous hoi polloi of Sydney who's crowds are outnumbered by the opposition whether it be New Zealand or the British Lions.

I mean you dare not play South Africa there for fear of an empty stadium....55555

If you've got a kid in high school, and he's going to have "international school" China with a basic Chinese comprehension certificate in his CV, might be invaluable later down the road.

    Just as an after thought...

Shanghai for excitement, pulse and progress. The ones selecting London have never lived there.

Culture and History, when China has eons of it, if that's what your into. Wholesome goodness, jesus where have you been.

The upside, a new culture and life to investigate/experience in China. The downside is language, unless you have the choice of a PA to assist you, in all thing cultural.

London is a dirty, overpriced, cesspit You know the score of Anglos. Beholden to it's masters not it's citizens.

Qatar is a dry flyblown misery, only broken by the airline lasses and the annual influx of expat's daughters.

Go to China, somewhere you know very little of and learn some new tricks.

^ You might like to check out tourism figures for London and Shanghai to see where most people prefer to visit.

There are a lot more Chinese trying to make it in London than there are Brits in Shanghai.

I certainly will be exploring the Shanghai option to it's fullest, role, package etc, front up some concerns I have, but if it was to come off, that it is my preferred future..... London is always coming at some point, no point to rush there.....

I'd say the only reason the UK is higher than the US is because Americans who want a change of climate or pace can head to a southern or western state = not emigrate, whereas Brits who go to a southern or eastern part of the EU = emigrate.
