Thread: Shit road construction.

I came across this this morning. Now this road has been repaired and repaired and repaired over the last year. It fails over and over again because they will not use road stone in the sub base construction. This road was constructed on clay. A hole appears so they fill it in with more clay and a topping of Macadam. As you can see in the photo's someone has placed a red tea shirt on the roadside as a danger warning. Not much fooking good in bad light is it? Before the red shirt it was a large branch in the middle of the road.











This is how the road was marked off 8 months ago.

It isn't really. Unfortunately the neanderthals that look after the utilities couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.
Outside my house we have a problem whereby the rains keep washing the road base away. They just fill it in and never do a permanent repair. These are the same people who look after the road above.

Some of the roads in my area are shit. You can ride happily for a few kilometres then suddenly there is 20 metres of zero road, mainly gravel and holes, before the road resumes. Very strange. I never ride anywhere unknown after dark because of this.

Thais are great road builders when they have the budget and proper machinery.

The roads being constructed on the Far Northern borders are brilliant, many great roads throughout Thailand yet they piss around building shitty back roads in the provinces.

I travel many back roads on my travels and some are diabolical.

as you well know terry, they always have the budget for both the correct materials and the correct machinery.

but the bidding process is fixed and those who award the contracts and the contractors themselves have their noses in the trough and so the road gets built with poor materials and fails after a year or two, and then the whole process is repeated.

it is called thainess terry. it is how the country is run.

pity the poor public lining the pockets of these thieves with their taxes who then have to use the roads.

You may be correct regards the rural back roads but on the main arterial roads they are mainly fine and constructed correctly.

In fact the road works are ongoing on a massive scale in the North.

I could post up some pictures from my last trip of the massive road projects going on but no point as my trolls come out to play.

maybe they have been told by their chinese overlords to stop fucking around and do things properly. the chinese need these roads as much as the thais.

Yep I've just ridden on a newly resurfaced road this morning in That Phanom. It was being laid last week last time I came here to visit someone and today it is being painted. A lovely surface on it, very well laid.

Look on the bright side. At least they are recycling the graft and bribes. Thais are really good at recycling where value is concerned.

Isaan is of course irrelevant to the current priority which is communication with the North.

The main arterial roads in Issan are fine though mainly.


Back roads are shit as per most small towns.

Terry, road construction is not a complex engineering feat - the Romans were constructing them 2000 years ago together with their viaducts, many of which remain and function to this day.

Thai will always cut corners in order to gain an advantage elsewhere, usually pecuniary and for some vested interest subsidised by the many.

Quite why you feel the need to trumpet their so-called achievements is mystifying. Are roads in Perth a recent development in your civilisation and you are still overwhelmed by their novelty?

The expansion of the double lane road, Hwy 24, from Nang Rong to Prasat looks to be coming close to completion. It will be interesting to see how it holds up under the constant stream of overloaded doubles hauling sugar cane to the processing plant outside Prasat.

All I'm doing is relaying it as I have found it after traveling many years and many thousands of KLM's all over Thailand.

I'm not reading shit on this forum and drawing a wide brush saying all of Thailand's roads are shit and the Thais could never possibly build a decent road.

I have no need to do that,

There within lies the problem,

The roads are grossly overloaded and this is what fuks them.

Authorities need to sort that out but of course this will not happen.

^ Getting future trade routes ready for expansion. Foreign investment is attracted by future-proof infrastructure.
