Knowledge gained, yet not applied is soon lost. problem with any "school." Something read or taught is only theoretical until applied, used or proven.

    I disagree.

I just remembered some physics I learned 30 years ago when I tried to get my head around installing a pressure tank to my water system.

Also surprised my Thai neighbours with my electric installation, derived from a mixture of something I remembered from the UK electricity board standards 20 years ago and stuff I learned back at high school.

We all forget things as time goes by, but the knowledge is still there. When I was a teenager, I used to make own flies for fly fishing. Since I now haven't done it for a long time, I have largely forgotten the skill, but I am convinced that it wouldn't take me long to relearn it, either by watching someone else in action, or simply by reading a book on the subject (which I have sacked away somewhere back in farangland). The same goes for other "forgotten" skills, e.g. languages not used for a long time.

Most of us possess far more knowledge that we are aware of. And as your knowledge and awareness of it grows, so (usually) does your appreciation of how little you actually know. I believe it was Socrates who once claimed he was the wisest of men, not because of what he knew, but because he alone realized how little he knew.

I thought that pretty much was the definition of "theoretical". Except for the the "proven" part - not quite sure what you are referring to there.
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

You are absolutely correct - thanks for pointing that out. Foreign langauges can be confusing at times, and English is no exception.

I used to be that way, but since there are so few Norwegians here in Bangkok, I have actually been forced to hire Thais.

My father (who has a Phd) always said that having an advanced degree was not a sign of intelligence, but rather a sign of persistence! He said that quite stupid people (I think he was referring to certain co-workers here) didn't have the brains that God gave a flea, but had still stayed in school long enough to get their Phd's.

I suppose I'm living proof of his statement, having spent 5 & 1/2 years getting a 4 year degree!

If having a degree didn't matter, people who don't have a degree wouldn't fucking bleat on about degrees so much.
