    Lest We Forget.
Um yes the forgetful ones seem to be Brits in Kent, BBC radio Kent continually have commemorating programs about these two world wars. Listeners phone in and say " We stood alone , nobody helped us"
Well they must be in the early stages of dementia to forget about the huge commonwealth contribution, and the pilots from Poland, Rhodesia , South Africa and India at the Battle of Britain .
We stood Alone, nobody helped us.
Only English veterans are remembered .
Just another reason why I won't wear a Poppy.

^ thanks Bob, but that's from a comedy T.V. Show made after the war. Dads Army.
But I get your point, it's the only education folks get from the BBC , old farts clowning around in a village home guard won the war.
No foreigners allowed in the film script. Well it's obvious , they just weren't here.

There were some foreigners in Dad's Army but they look strangely familiar

Dad's Army! haha.. I remember that one. I lived with my Grandparents since I was abandoned by my mother at 5.

They used to watch re-runs of Dad's Army. I never saw the appeal, just loved to see them both laugh. Grandad, was a real British gentleman. Came over on a ship
after the war and married my Nana. He never spoke much of his time in the Navy on a torpedo boat (MTB).

He was only 17 when he entered the Navy. We can't even comprehend what they went through.

RIP Grandad... and to all those that fought in the war.

Before taking the piss too far.. just remember a couple of actors fought in WW1 and Godfrey (bless him) fought in both:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Ridley

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Laurie

Godfrey as the medic always had an ironic tone to it once I understood what my Dad had told me on first watching the series....

... it's not just a comedy... it portrays very British ways of dealing with life under stress... in a comical fashion....although very simplistically.

Next point is that WW1 changed peoples' attitudes to authority and nations' debts to other nations (money, material, man-power) and that debt was never honoured before the next war...and continued well after it to the point that some people need to be reminded of just who helped whom....(pompeysbroke et al).

I will always have respect for those that joined the Services to help their Country, or allies, in time of need. I may question the need before the commitment and question after it...but never during.

I would have been one of those that charged over the top, fearing for my life and at the same time revelling in it. I would have been one of those that moaned during the (mostly) boring bits and sworn like a trooper if my rations weren't on time or I didn't have enough ammo. I would have been the one stuck on night duty and early morning duty and recce duty and work detail duty and make-a-miracle-duty and would have probably died in just the same way as all the other poor buggers did....eventually

    ...That's why I buy a poppy or three ....

    Well said, Troy.

Mad respect and admiration for all that served (and died) for their respective countries. I remember (while in Japan) reading the last letters of Kamikaze pilots to their parents, very touching indeed. They were just kids, doing their duty. They had no choice.

There are no winners for humanity in war only losers...

    To: Roland Aubrey Leighton (1895-1915)

    Perhaps

Perhaps some day the sun will shine again,
And I shall see that still the skies are blue,
And feel once more I do not live in vain,
    Although bereft of You.

Perhaps the golden meadows at my feet
Will make the sunny hours of spring seem gay,
And I shall find the white May-blossoms sweet,
    Though You have passed away.

Perhaps the summer woods will shimmer bright,
And crimson roses once again be fair,
And autumn harvest fields a rich delight,
    Although You are not there.

Perhaps some day I shall not shrink in pain
To see the passing of the dying year,
And listen to Christmas songs again,
    Although You cannot hear.'

But though kind Time may many joys renew,
There is one greatest joy I shall not know
Again, because my heart for loss of You
    Was broken, long ago.

Vera Brittain is best known for her book Testament of Youth, in which she tells the story of her harrowing experiences in the First World War. It was then that she realised that war wasn’t the glorious adventure many young men thought it to be. Afterwards she became strongly - and famously - associated with the peace movement, to which she was committed for the rest of her life. She died in 1972.

The Lesson by George Evans, 92 (veteran of the Normandy campaign)

I remember my friends and enemies too.
We all did our duty for our countries.
We all obeyed our orders, then we murdered each other.
    Isn't war stupid?

The Soldiers At Lauro - Spike Milligan.

    Young are our dead
    Like babies they lie
    The wombs they blest once
    Not healed dry
    And yet - too soon
    Into each space
    A cold earth falls
    On colder face.
    Quite still they lie
    These fresh-cut reeds
    Clutched in earth
    Like winter seeds
    But they will not bloom
    When called by spring
    To burst with leaf
    And blossoming
    They sleep on
    In silent dust
    As crosses rot
    And helmets rust.
As a true remembrance to those that died, a new law should be introduced in the US, UK, France and the other war mongering countries. Who ever says "we need to go to war" or attack another country, including politicians, journalists, media men who own media companies, business men.... they personally with all their family and friends are put right on the front line walking into the war. Marching in ahead of the tanks and planes and drones. On the floor with a gun in hand marching into war. All these wars will stop pretty bloody quickly then.

Considering that both sides were funded by the same people, and a significant amount of the protagonists in senior positions in the military as well as the more nasty and perverse medical side of things were shepherded out of Germany to the UK and US, you can frankly say that the wankers behind every war always win, and only the people fighting it or civilians caught up in it, or the tax payers who pay for it... lose. Every time.

Remembrance crosses stand in the Field of Remembrance outside Westminster Abbey ahead of its official opening, on November 3, 2015, in London, England. Hundreds of small crosses bearing a poppy are being planted in the Field of Remembrance to pay tribute to British servicemen and women who have lost their lives in conflict
